Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

The Alito Court: A rare interview with the influential Supreme Court justice
Justice Samuel Alito discussed his opinion in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the leaked draft and its aftermath, same-sex marriage rights and why he's not retiring yet.

Having way too much fun with this game, but I almost threw my phone across the room when it told me that *the* Sir Ian McKellen was “out of his comfort zone” in a queer film.

Like, are these people aware of the sheer amount of depravity that has been captured on film? This won’t scratch a “darkest films of 2026” list.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict that a PG-13 superhero movie will not, in fact, be one of the darkest movies ever made.
Buzz Crave:

Avengers: Doomsday reportedly has at least 6 major deaths.

It’s described as one of the darkest movies ever made.

This is also insanely collectivist thinking. No immigrant of a particular nationality can be assimilated until all immigrants of that nationality are assimilated. Which is, of course, impossible so long as people continue to emigrate to the US. But that’s probably the point.

There is no racism. There is only real Americans noticing that minority groups are not properly assimilated, as evidenced by minorities’ engagement in un-American activities like *checks notes* attending a football game in the South.

When a family member told me they didn’t like Zootopia because it was “too political,” I asked them to explain exactly which “political” issue they found so controversial. Back then, they were too embarrassed to answer. Today, I imagine the answer would look something like this.

I’m late to this one, but I just started Omar El Akkad’s “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This.” Listening to this description of Western liberalism felt like getting punched in the gut.
One of the hallmarks of Western liberalism is an assumption in hindsight of virtuous resistance as the only polite expectation of people on the receiving end of colonialism. While the terrible thing is happening, while the land is still being stolen, and the natives still being killed, any form of opposition is terroristic and must be crushed for the sake of civilization. But decades, centuries later, when enough of the land has been stolen and enough of the natives killed, it is safe enough to venerate resistance in hindsight. I tell stories for a living and there’s a thick thread of narrative by well-meaning white Westerners that exalts the native populations in so many parts of the world for standing up to the occupiers. Makes of their narrative a neat, reflexive arc in which it was always understood by the colonized and, this part implied, the descendants of the colonizer, that what happened was wrong.

To the extent you can judge fame by how well it’s known by the next generation, this millennial is very familiar with “This is your brain on drugs,” whereas I did not know that “I learned it by watching you” was a part of an anti-drug campaign until this moment.

I think that conduct would likely go beyond negligence and could be described as reckless, which is where one is aware that their behavior carries significant risks but chooses to proceed anyways. Which I’m totally good prosecuting. www.law.cornell.edu/wex/reckless

Professor’s New Book Tackles ‘Problems and Puzzles’ in Criminal Law
Among the many questions pondered: Is it just to execute someone for a crime that they have no memory of committing?

But if “neglect” includes momentary inattention that ultimately results in harm to a child, then I wouldn’t support prosecution. That would be negligence that resulted in a tragedy, but I don’t think the negligence should be criminally culpable.
130
Taylor Kordsiemon @tkords.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think the vast majority of parents/guardians who have neglected children have done so intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly, so I would support prosecution. Assuming “neglect” means failure to care for children over a significant period, it will almost always be more than mere “negligence.”

Taylor Kordsiemon @tkords.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
As a matter of principle, I tend to disagree with permitting criminal punishment on a negligence or strict liability basis. But I can think of no reason why such standards shouldn’t permit civil liability for would-be-crimes-but-a-rogue-AI-agent-did-it situations.

Unfortunately, I think the VW Buzz is the only legit electric van on the market right now. There’s some other family-sized options (Kia EV9, Hyundai IONIC), but I don’t know how they are in terms of quality.

Define “family model”? I can fit a car seat and two big kids in the back of my 2030 Chevy Bolt, which cost me $15k with 20k miles a couple years ago. Storage is limited, and we use a minivan for our main family transport (two adults + four kids). But it’s awesome as a secondary family car.

I recently read Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.” Afterward, I wanted to watch the film adaptation with Robert Redford, which I KNEW existed. But I couldn’t find it. Thought I was going crazy. Turns out I was combining the title for “The Old Man and the Gun” with the poster for “All Is Lost.”

Let there be any mistake: I am firmly against political violence and think it would be bad if Trump were assassinated. I just think the survey is poorly worded if the idea was to get at what Democrats actually support happening.
1130
Taylor Kordsiemon @tkords.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Also, it’s a fine line, but “I’d be happy to hear Trump was dead, even if he was assassinated” is not necessarily incompatible with opposition to political violence. Human nature is such that one can feel positively about an outcome even if they think the thing that led to that outcome is bad.

Note that it doesn’t quote Eggars on that. I’m sure that the sources meant to use “Olde English” as meaning English from the Shakespearean period, without realizing the term referred to language from a prior era.

If I have it straight, Missouri HB1 never went into effect as a matter of state law, but under federal law, Missouri must pretend that HB1 went into effect. Which federal law compels Missouri to enforce a law it never passed? The one passed in 1789, before anyone had heard of a "party primary."

I think they were referring to the 2016 film of the same title about Nat Turner. In the comments, they referred to “Nate” inciting violence against slaveholders. The 1915 film doesn’t have anyone named Nate, so that seems like either a misspelling of “Nat” or a reference to the actor, Nate Parker.

1. I don’t believe this caricature of Utah’s law school for a second. 2. Even if it were true (it’s not), the author’s subjective experience at one law school is not indicative of a broader problem in legal education. 3. As a Utah practitioner, I can confirm that our recent law grads are great.

I don’t mean to minimize the 2014 incident, but if he really intended to engage in such a blatant act of antisemitism, then I would be shocked if that was the only example. Is it possible that he isn’t a “gutter antisemite” but just made a very, very bad mistake?

I haven’t followed Macklemore closely, but I remember him apologizing for the costume incident, explaining that he wasn’t trying to characterize Jews, and worked with the ADL afterward. Whether one bought that explanation at the time, have there been other incidents of antisemitism?
