As always, there’s a relevant Futurama clip

I think the only reason they reached out is because I wrote my name and email down at ST's booth for the Move Redmond Open Streets Festival, so basically just luck 😆

just to clarify, this one was for the Downtown Redmond extension, but to give you an idea of the timeline I received this on Oct 28, 2024 and DRLE opened May 10, 2025. so around 6 months before. I don't know if it's the same for every opening, though.

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 02/10/2026
this is how they described it in the email I got for the DRLE photoshoot
As part of the opening, we’re seeking to photograph/video people like yourself who work, live, study or play in the neighborhoods surrounding the new stations. These fun and joyful photos/videos will be included in our opening materials expected to be displayed at the stations for 6-8 weeks after opening and in the marketing campaign. You were recommended as a great candidate for this by Charlie Hockett at Sound Transit.

they are temporary, usually up for a few months (or, at least, less than a year) post-opening. they had photos taken and posted for DRLE as well

train capacity is significantly improved with the Airos which should help a lot with this! from @theurbanist.org: "317 seats compared to as few as 160 seats that are available on the Amfleet I cars in most common use otherwise"

if you don't want to agree on established, verifiable facts then I'm not sure how this discussion is going anywhere

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
many things can be true at once: - AI companies (and big tech at large) lie: very often TRUE! - we need strong and strict regulation on the development and operation of AI: as true as it's ever been - a functionality of their product does what it says it does: also TRUE!

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
what? I literally never said that. the complete extent and scope of my argument is that the SynthID verification tools provided by these companies do work very reliably to detect images generated by their models. it's an independently-verifiable fact that's very difficult to lie about.

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
I would much prefer OpenAI and Google provide their SynthID classifiers as local tools, but this is legitimately the best way we have at the moment to positively identify AI-generated images. it's an important tool to combat mis- and disinformation
120
TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
as AI-generated imagery continues to get better and better to the point where you can't rely on oddities like wrong number of fingers or garbled text to identify them it's *very* important to understand what kind of provenance tools are available and their capabilities
120
TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
once again, you don't need to trust OpenAI or Google on this; you can either verify it yourself or read the paper on how it works: arxiv.org/pdf/2510.09263 SynthID verification does not take anywhere *near* the amount of compute/energy required to train/run their generative models.

What is SynthID?

I have no comment regarding the training claim you're making, simply because I have no evidence one way or the other (and I'm guessing you don't either)

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
skepticism is good, but let's keep it rooted in actual facts rather than speculation and extrapolation please. SynthID is proven to work exceptionally well with a very low false-positive rate. you can try it yourself.

we can't solve every problem at once, especially under a federal administration that's actively hostile to non-car transportation, so it's important to take time to celebrate wins when we have them. we can do that and still demand more! they aren't mutually exclusive. keeps morale high

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
Yeah. Not doubting the severity of devastation, it's just puzzling why someone would go through the trouble of AI-generating a fake image when plenty of real ones exist.

TJ @tjtjtj.tj · 28/09/2026
The one on the left is fake, confirmed via SynthID watermark from OpenAI. Right one seems real and corroborated by news reports.

Great update! I really like the ability to get notified when a specific vehicle is assigned to a trip. One suggestion, though: can you make the create account form password manager friendly? iOS doesn’t offer to generate one there. It’s a big point of friction when apps don’t support this. Thanks!

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.
