We urgently need to overhaul our academic reward systems to incentivize impactful research that addresses real-world issues like digital health literacy, AI in education, or support for first-generation students, rather than just rewarding publication volume. #HigherEd #MachineLearning

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Our country is currently bending away from justice, and the harmful consequences of this are real and significant (see thread below). Our moral arc will not bend back until we pull it ourselves.

@tjroyuh.bsky.social wrote an AERA conference submission about how ability self-concepts, interest, and positive perceptions of teachers' beliefs about their ability in science supported feelings of belonging for secondary students.
Fostering Sense of Belonging in Science Education: The Role of Self-Concept, Interest, and Students’ Perceptions of Teachers’ Beliefs

Abstract
This study examines how students’ perceptions of their teacher’s beliefs, student self-concepts, and interest in science influence students' sense of belonging in science education. Using the situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT) framework, middle and high school students (N = 1,194) completed surveys about their science motivation. Students who believed they were good at science (self-concept) and found it interesting were more likely to feel a sense of belonging in science classrooms. Additionally, students’ perceptions of their teachers’ beliefs about their abilities significantly predicted motivation and engagement. However, demographic factors such as gender and race did not significantly moderate links between belonging and other motivational factors. This suggests that motivation and perceptions play a universal role in shaping students' belonging in science. These findings highlight the importance of creating supportive science classrooms where teachers encourage student competence and curiosity. Fostering inclusive science environments can enhance student engagement and motivation.

My grading philosophy is that students should be evaluated on learning and growth, not on how well they do compared to other students. Constructive feedback, self-reflections, and student autonomy are more valuable than arbitrary points that cause stress and anxiety. #ungradingchat
