There's this really obscure horror movie from 2003 called "Fear of the Dark" and, for the longest time, I always thought that the monsters from this film would pop out of it in the middle of the night and kill me.

In fact, I recently stumbled upon a tweet where someone argued that a problem with indie animation is that, while the creatives are competent artists, they lack effective writing skills. Others responded by claiming that this is at least one consequence of people not broadening their inspirations.

"Does anyone else feel like most of the problem is everyone watching the same thing. Like that there is just a shared collection of things people watch so everything feels and seems so samey?

This shit scared me so bad I started reading lololol"

"thats what happens when you dont have any interests outside your preferred art from

as uncle Iroh said, “It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale”"

"I think it's a mixture of everyone is watching the same thing and the content reaches everyone simultaneously.

The bar for whats "good" has been risen so high it's not feasible for any person to achieve. And the Internet likes to hate more than enjoy things"

What scene makes you emotional no matter how many times you've seen it? Because Ellie's passing is too easy, I'm gonna say the moment where Carl discovers Ellie's last message. Ellie gave up on her dreams to visit Paradise Falls but only because she was happier living life with her husband.

Okay, I know this may be off topic, but I'm starting to feel like this is a big problem when it comes to original stories anymore.

Artist, show what built your art style! > Danny Phantom > Gorillaz (particularly Phases One and Two) > Atlantis: The Lost Empire > Most of Genndy Tartakovsky's 2D works in general, but primarily Clone Wars

People seem to be under the impression that indie animation started with the success of Hazbin Hotel. I've already stated that indie animation has been a thing since as early as the '60s -- maybe even earlier -- but as far as internet animation generally goes, I think these deserve more credit.

These screencaps from a friend's Discord server sum it up nicely. TLRD: because corporations are EXPECTED to fuck up at this point, people have FAR higher standards for indie creators -- especially queer women since they make up most of said creators. To these folks, queer art MUST be perfect.

See, that's another thing. People act like indie animation is a new thing when it's been around since the '60s. The biggest reason indie is becoming more prevalent today is because technological advancements now allow people to create cartoons from even the comfort of their own homes.

Reminds me of this interaction with a friend on Discord last year😆 (Said friend is the author of a webcomic that's set in the 1990s just for context)

https://1990somethingcomic.com/comic/july-20-1995/

"If this were the modern era, I could TOTALLY see Jeff being into "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke cause the lyrics PERFECTLY reflect his backwards way of thinking 😆"

"By modern, you mean 12 years ago? 😅 ...God, I'm old 😑"

"Well you know what I mean 😅"

I don't know if this relates but I'm reminded of this post from Twitter where someone argued that the idea of queer people existing for the sole purpose of pissing off cis men implies that that's their ONLY reason for existing.

"You see anon, any time someone makes a character queer just to piss off men, it ultimately undermines the importance of being queer by implying that they are just tools to piss people off and not letting them be actually good representation."

I've ALWAYS hated how the term "fanfiction" is used derogatorily. I get it, there's over a million poorly written fanworks out there. However, it's unfair to imply that there are no good fanfics period. For that, I think I'll take a moment to boost some of my favorite fan stories in recent memory.
