SM built a big outdoor mall with uninteresting box stores that dont appeal to locals (and arent competitive as a tourist attraction - LA has a lot of malls) in the middle of downtown. its not that hard of a story to parse

literally the organizing principle of the current democratic party in the US is state pluralism

the US was a slaver empire for the beginning of its history and then an apartheid state until the modern era. now it is a pluralistic democracy.

look, just about ever full fledged democracy on earth outside of europe has adopted pluralism as its organizing principle, including the US. this is not the only way to build a state bsky.app/profile/dani...

i also do not think there is anything terribly unique about how zionism has manifested itself, it is just what has occured many many times over when a state tries to paper over the contradictions between how people and national borders are organized

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
the nation-state is not the default organizational structure, it was a predominantly 18th-20th century construction which existed in practice *almost* exclusively in europe and required a couple hundred years of ethnic cleansing, genocide, and forced religious conversion to build

the backdrop of the discussion over zionism is this question about how to best organize states. i am surprised at how favorably many liberals view nationalism not just as a mode of organizing resistance to (post)colonial oppression but as the preferred building block of state organization

i am not sure i agree with what jeremy o’harris is saying here (that journalists should ignore the elites) but its interesting that the response is “my job is to reflect society” and not “my job is to report on things which are occuring in society”, which are very much not the same tjing

After 8pm in October don’t shop at Erewhon. If you’re below the 75th percentile in income or not at least an LA 6, they take you to the back and harvest you.

fair perhaps i should reconsider

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
thats great, then i think we dont disagree here and its just a semantic issue
040
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
i mean, i think the people saying that i want to destroy israel clearly mean “an israel which does not maintain ethnic supremacy for jews is functionally nonexistant”

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
it was notably partitioned, forced to give up its conquered territories, its (captured) leaders were mostly shot, and it was told never to have an offensive military again

rfra but genocide doesnt pass strict scrutiny

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
like the original position was whether no zionist religious organization should be considered problematic for green membership and i dont think we can confidently say that

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
me either, though nobody is advocating that?

i dont think wahhabist mosques generally do this either?

i think the issue is that the israeli state’s existence is defined as the continued maintence of this regime bsky.app/profile/tire...
160
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
the resolution that failed would have prevented any sanctions on members for their affiliations with religious zionist organizations, it did not require the opposite
120
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
states are absolutely constrained by specific codes of conduct as well. notably - genocide as defined by the UN and the UNSC has authorized military intervention to prevent state violations of international law
080
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
dumb fucking argument
260
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
this pertains specifically to sovereign states, which i am not
250
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
if they continue to prosecute a genocide, i think we should keep our options on the table as we should with any other state which does this
040
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
i mean, the resolution would have prohibited any consideration whatsoever for someone’s affiliation with a religious organization specifically w/re to zionism and israel?
140
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
i think we should give them nothing and actively oppose their interests as we do with similar countries
140
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
it is the fact that they are prosecuting a genocide and maintain tiered and seperate legal rights for non-jews, and especially arabs
290
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
do you think the issue i have with israel is what they call themselves?
190
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
you are asking if, in a pure hypothetical, whether i think states like saudi arabia deserve to exist? i am a liberal so the answer is obviously no

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
supporters of the current russian state deserve condemnation

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
very obviously yes lol
180
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
do you think we should send iran and china JDAMs? defend them at the UN? what is your position here - that genocide and apartheid should be supported everywhere?
140
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
please cite what international law holds that its legal and fine to hold seperate political rights based on ethnicity?
130
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
my position on israel is they are an openly genocidal apartheid state and should be treated similar to any state in those cirucumstances ought to be
080
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
what is it you think i am advocating? do you think i believe we should topple these governments?
280
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
do they have a right to maintain seperate political rights for non-jews?
270
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
this requires constant high salience politicking which became untenable when the israeli government started prosecuting a genocide.
070
Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
the reason we talk about israel more is because supporters of israel want the US-israeli relationship to be based on shared values and political structures a la the US relationship with Canada, not on a transactional basis, which is what we have with the saudis and UAE.

Matt @tiredgenerally.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
