Saw some sweet graffiti today in central Massachusetts on my stroller hike. This is an old rail underpass below the 90 north of Dorothy Pond. At least whoever is doing graffiti here has alright politics :)
The concrete side of a structure supporting a highway, adjacent to a slope overgrown with herbs and shrubs. Visible graffiti (all simple line letters) reads "FUCK TRUMP", "King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard", "Kill Nazi Scum", "Kirk was a fascist good riddance", and "Let trans ppl EXIST".Graffiti on a concrete wall with dirt beneath: a pink rose blossom with four green leaves, very well painted, next to the name Kira; "Ike" in big green block letters with another big green word cut off starting "FA..."; a grinning face with eyes, teeth, and eyebrows in yellow, red, and black; "We are on stolen land" in simple line letters; some yellow ears or lungs; finally some fainter stuff I can't make out well.Picture of a dirt trail heading out from under an overpass between grasses and into some woods. On the concrete wall of the support at the left of the frame we can see graffiti that reads "Make this a bike path".A grassy slope leads up to a concrete wall that's part of the support structure for an overpass. There are some basic graffiti animals to the sides (perhaps a bird, a cat, and a newt?) but center frame there's a stunning piece of very fancifully-designed block letters done in white, light blue, and light purple with maroon shadows and pink backing/edging that make the letters pop. It's either abstract or (I suspect) lettering that's completely incomprehensible to my untrained eye, but it's beautiful.

Just finished reading "Holler: A Graphic Memoir of Rural Resistance" by Denali Sai Nalamalapu. An excellent graphic novel about resistance to the Mountain Valley Pipeline in Virginia and West Virginia. Although the pipeline is sadly operational today […] [Original post on kolektiva.social]
Page from the book.

Four frames showing a man with a flower in his long red-brown hair looking out at a starry sky above striped mountains, then just the mountains with starts and the moon above, then two people sitting and hugging next to a campfire with the mountains in the background, finally the person from the first panel looking at the reader.

First frame says "The more I learned about the world, the more clear-eyed I became about how I wanted to change it."

Second says "As people become more disillusioned with the world, they're going to turn to people with a vision for a better future..."

Third says "who are able to find joy despite seeing the world for what it is."

Fourth panel says "This is where what comes next will be grown."

Just finished "Fustuk" by Robert Mgrdich Apelian. Without exaggeration, it is a true masterpiece, an absolutely stunning graphic novel about food, family, and magical contracts that reminds me of both Witch Hat Atelier and Young Bride's Stories. The truly […] [Original post on kolektiva.social]
On the left a scrawny big-haired young man is doing something with his hands that creates shockwaves across a two-page spread, and being blown backwards by the force of it, his glasses knocked flying. Seams of distorted decorative edging fly through the drawing as if distorted and blown by a sudden wind, winding and streaming all over the place and tinting different sections blue and red, spilling across the orange of the young man and several other characters who are caught up in the chaos. There's a brawny man with a close-shaved head and thick eyebrows, a frail woman grabbing onto the young man's leg, a wide-eyed woman wearing a broad decorative necklace, and a short-haired woman clutching a little girl who is shocked/amazed. There's also a huge round thing which seems poised to eat or bite the young man, with its massive tongue sticking out with some food still on it.A page broken into four horizontal panels, first blue, then red, then blue again and finally red again. The panels are separated by very detailed fine decorative edgings, with very different styles between the red and blue panels. Each panel shows the face of a woman, younger in the blue panels and wearing a hood which keeps in most of her curly hair, and then older in the red panels, with messy strands of hair sticking out all over. In the first panel, the young woman is surprised, with wide eyes and tears forming; her mouth is slightly open and her big pupils sparkle. In the second panel, the older woman is shocked, her eyes also wide but now with small scribbled pupils, her mouth also a but open showing the edges of her teeth. In the third panel, the young woman smiles and squints slightly, one tear falling down her cheek. She is overcome with joy. In the fourth panel, the old woman is gnashing her teeth in sorrow and frustration, her eyes brimming with tears.

I'm reading Witch Hat Atelier right now (checked out of my local library) and it's top-notch amazing, including the plot, world-building, ethics, character designs, and of course three staggering artistic quality, both in raw illustration quality and artful […] [Original post on kolektiva.social]
A dark-haired boy wearing a conical hat looks on nonplussed (indicated by horizontal shading) from the left margin, as a girl's head (also wearing a conical hat) looks at him with a confident expression. Below the neck, the girl's body is just a few scattered puffs of cloud, blown sideways by a gust of wind. Text behind the girl's head reads: "May've got a little AHEAD of herself..."

[Long; central Massachusetts colonial history] Today on a whim I visited a site in Massachusetts marked as "Huguenot Fort Ruins" on OpenStreetMaps. I drove out with my 4-year-old through increasingly rural central Massachusetts forests & fields to end up on […] [Original post on kolektiva.social]

@volts.wtf this is an entire aesthetic.
A person doing a wheelie on a bicycle in front of two burning Waymo driverless cars which are covered with graffiti. The person is wearing an N95 mask.

Cool bug, looks kinda like a fixed-wing aircraft with its wings stuck out while perched. Would love to know what it is if someone has an idea. About the size of a cranefly, but with opaque wings. #Insect
