A super rough day 2 for #peachtober26chimney. I don't have a lot of time to do these, squeezing it into the final moments before bedtime, after the chaos of parenting. I wasn't sure about posting this, but sometimes showing rough concepts is as important as polished pieces. C, for chimney.

Did a fun little sketchy thing for Day 1 of Peachtober, celebrating the start of spooky season with a spider wearing a wee little acorn hat, for the prompt, "Oak"... because why not? Nice to draw something whimsical for a change. #Peachtober26Oak
The letter, "O" for Oak sits behind the dangling figure of a spider, wearing a little acorn cup as a hat. The O is light green, on a dark green background, with oak leaves dotted around.

A recent project I loved creating for The Lab Press. Creatures & Corridors, a fantasy horror with a D&D/Stranger Things vibe. Exploring different options for the logo was fun, and seeing the foil elements on the book cover and slipcase is the cherry on top!

Mine was Legend Tim Curry...which was also incredibly confusing in the best possible way.
Tim Curry dressed as Darkness from the film Legend. Ginormous satanic horns, corn cob and, enormous grin with a prosthetic chin and red all over. Horny AF.

The visceral, organic nature of his red, room-filling sculptures works perfectly in the context of the brutalist building. Concrete Vs flesh.
An inverted red mountain of paint is suspended from the ceiling in a white gallery space. A polished, tiled floor reflects the tip as it ominously hangs down to the ground.A close-up of plastic encased red and white paint, dried in swirls like a Jenny Saville painting, it feels like blood and gore. The clean lines of the Hayward Gallery's concrete window, looking out over a roof terrace, with a bright blue sky.

Wonderful visit to the Hayward Gallery to see Anish Kapoor's exhibition. I cannot adequately explain the unsettling vertigo of staring into the seemingly endless depths of his void-like shapes. Or the strangeness of a flat-looking plane suddenly producing contours when moving a fraction to the side.
A seemingly flat, black oval on a white wall.Another black oval, a horizontal hole in a protruding white shape, attached to a wall.

MINOTAUR from @ignitionpress.bsky.social. A logo that bridges the divide between mythology and technology, inspired by circuit boards and the simplicity of cuneiform. It's a glorious book! W. @sispurrier.bsky.social A. Mike Dowling C. @sofiedodgson.bsky.social L. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Who did I promise this copy of Through the Boughs to yesterday?!
My hand holding a copy of Through the Boughs: A Yuletide Offering comic book from DSTLRY. The cover has the title in yellow, over a graphic illustration like a Victorian illuminated book, with circling, white leaf patterns and a yellow candle.

I'm coming to Thought Bubble, but I won't be tabling so I've brought a few copies of my illustrated variant covers for #1 of @jockbsky.bsky.social's incredible sci-fi epic, GONE, and the wonderfully creepy festive anthology, Through the Boughs: A Yuletide Offering. Let me know if you'd like one!

Last night I mourned the passing of my thirties with some amazing pals and danced until the Dark Lili (Legend, 1985) costume I made at the last possible second with foam, velcro and a glue-gun, literally fell apart. Bliss.

I saw the Jenny Saville exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery last week and I still haven't gotten over the impact of the brushwork and the sheer scale of the paintings. I'd never seen her work in person before, and it blew me away!
A painting of a woman's face, lips parted, eyes half-closed, strongly under-lit. Using thick brush strokes and a mess of colours that capture the essential features of the face.A close-up in a different angle of the brushwork on the woman's face.A close-up of another painting, showing vivid colours contrasting with the soft beige tones of a white-skinned woman's eye.A portrait of a naked pregnant woman and child, struggling in her arms. Depicting motherhood and the battle for moments of stillness. Charcoal lines repeat the gestures like echoes, imbuing the still image with a feeling of non-stop movement.

I've been really enjoying reading, 'Tiggy Thistle and the Lost Guardians' by the excellent Chris Riddell to my son. Especially the little Easter Egg headshot of the third, 'Stiltskin' brother...'Trumple'.
Front cover to Tiggy Thistle and the Lost Guardians, showing young Tiggy in a blue coat with a yellow scarf and big boots with black, frizzy hair, marching forward. Beside her are a tiny man with flowers growing out of him, a small rat with a Flour bag on its head and a rust-coloured giant in a cloak. The Stiltskin Brothers, printed in blue pencil on the book's page. Three headshots of grumpy looking elves, "Crumple", "Rumple" and "Trumple"...who looks remarkably like a certain US President. All elves have long, pointed hats with bells dangling on their heads.

Here are the illustrations for Dry Dock and CRUMB without the text, so you can see how the day/night tones shift between the two scenes. I also altered the Dry Dock rocket position a little for the final layout, to allow for the text.

Last year I illustrated the label for Northdown Brewery's alcohol free beer, Dry Dock, and they loved it so much that I got to adapt it for their latest release, CRUMB! There's something great about being able to revisit a concept and shift things to fit a different perspective.

Went to the Tim Burton exhibition at the Design Museum and thought it was fascinating to see how his style has remained consistent and unique for decades. It's so interesting to see how his personal work informed his professional, and vice versa.
Two weird, twisting, black Tim Burton character models. One is small and dog-like, with a huge mouth full of needle-sharp teeth and loads of eyeballs on lengthy stalks, the other is taller than most men with a long neck and fragile protrusions like twiggy arms. It had a large ball for a head with more eyeballs attached all around it.
