Dipterocarpus oblongifolius Blume (Dipterocarpaceae) - well named for the oblong leaves, more narrow when young. Often fruiting on and off throughout the year here in Singapore Botanic Gardens. Fruits often eaten.

Tropical Plant Families Identification Handbook has a new 2026 printing - some tweaks to families and updates of species numbers (and a few errors corrected). E.g., Icacinaceae are no longer ‘Unplaced’ and Boraginaceae changed to reflect family debates. #botany

In 1934, the UT Herbarium lost nearly 30,000 specimens in the Morrill Hall fire, including the historic collections of Dr. Augustin Gattinger. Thanks to Aaron "Jack" Sharp and support from other institutions, the collection has grown to approximately 710,000 specimens.

Kapur (Dryobalanops aromatica C.F. Gaertn., Dipterocarpaceae), when growing together and the same age (ie usually plantation) is famous for “crown shyness”. Fruiting heavily today in FRIM, Kepong. The bright pink radicle (seed root) jumped out from the leaf litter.
