I enjoyed yesterday's Quaker Studies conference on Quakers and the Law. Fascinating presentations covered questions including what it's like to be a Quaker judge, how outer right internet discourse about Quakers focusses on prisons, and what Quakers might say about AI use in the legal world.
Our conference venue, the Central Quaker Meeting House in Bristol. It's a single story brick building with a sign board outside, some parking and bike racks, and a few steps or a slope up to a red door which is half open.

Michael Foran's book is of high quality. I would urge anyone who is interested in the law in this area to read the book and judge for themselves.

Am put in mind of Cory Doctorow's term "enshittification". We are all surrounded by systems that deliver constant low-level frustration, which means that a lot of people are low-level angry for a lot of the time. I wonder sometimes how much this contributes to the rancour in our public discourse.

Thank you. I understand therefore three individuals have been involved in approving this document: the Recording Clerk, the Clerk to Trustees, and the Assistant Clerk to Trustees. The total number of members and attenders in Quakers in Britain is a little over 18,000.

I assume that this statement was authorised by the Recording Clerk. Please can you say what consultation there was with other Quaker bodies or with Friends generally before this statement was issued. I am not aware of any consultation with Friends generally.

There's a lot of interesting material on the @sexmatters2quakers.bsky.social account. It is a scandal and a disgrace that this account is blocked by the official @quaker.org.uk account. Sometimes the talk about finding "kinder ground" on contentious issues seems like so much pious hogwash.

I have seen various bizarre claims today on this site about Michael Foran: (a) he doesn’t have a law degree; (b) he incites violence against trans people; (c) he has no friends. All of these claims are false.

Yes: but when MPs vote for their leader (at any rate when their party is in power) their votes should be public. Absurd that MPs vote in public to make laws but can vote in private to choose a PM. They should be accountable (to electorate) for how they vote, in both cases.
010
timpittpayne.bsky.social @timpittpayne.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
Tory PMs have been chosen by votes of members. But no sitting Tory PM has ever been removed by vote of Tory members. If Starmer stands against AN Other and loses a vote among Labour members, then Labour members will have removed Starmer as PM. That is the point of the original post.

Religious pacifists tend to assume that "just war" theory means something like, "war, in general, is justified". Not so. Just war theory sets a high bar before warfare can be morally legitimate.

Another Quaker account blocked by @quaker.org.uk is @kaybaxter.bsky.social Very sad to see this. If we can't find a healthier way of handling differences within our own community, how can we be peacemakers to the wider world? Are we salt that has lost its savour?

In the morally inverted world of today's self-styled progressives, it seems that words can be "literal violence", while actual violence can be legitimate communication.

Note to viewers: Women observe behaviour because it gives a lot more information about people than the words they say. They learn to do this from about age 13 onwards, because it's a crucial step in keeping themselves safe outside the home (and sometimes inside). It's not particularly funny.
