Jim Stewartson: This is severe psychosis. He exists in an alternate reality constructed by his own grandiose delusions. This separate world is protected by people who use him for their own purposes, and by people like Natalie Harp who guard him from narcissistic injury.

He is not in this world.

If you want to say education isn't one of them, fine, but I note that Common Core and No Child Left Behind had their origins in a Republican administration. 2/2

But is this the wrong debate? The question isn't whether centralizing power is good or bad but whether it's appropriate. Some things only a central power can do. 1/2

Indeed, the standard examples (Achilles, Hesiod blessing competition, potters signing their work, lyric poets like Archilochus or Sappho describing their personal feelings) only stand out by contrast with other near eastern societies.

I think he steps down no matter what. If Republicans hold the senate, he gets a Republican replacement. If Dems win, he has to gamble on 2028 and would reasonably assume that a Democrat wins the WH, so Trump + R minority is his only option.

Babylon Berlin should have been on there. The Bureau deserved a higher ranking. House of Cards was an interesting novelty in streaming but wore out its welcome quickly.

Any news outlet that spent even one segment or one article on "Joe Biden is old" in 2024 should be going wall-to-wall with stories about the dementia-ravaged 80-year-old who keeps posting AI garbage and telling insanely obvious lies about himself. And yet

I think one silly episode per season is ok, but this year they have had three so far, plus the very arch Chiaroscuro. They badly need to have a few real adventures. We watch the show for excitement and conflict, only occasionally and intermittently to be amused. Start firing fasers, please!

College students’ increasing reliance on AI, John Paul Rollert argues, is teaching them a “knack for cutting corners, a disdain for community rules, and an assumption that a spirit of integrity, and the sacrifices it assumes, is the reserve of suckers and wimps”:

1 - For a long time, one of my techniques for testing for my Greek and Roman history courses was to give two sets of essays for exams. One set they would only see on the day of the test. The other they got a week in advance (based closely on the readings in the sources) and they could prepare for,

Majority (over 50%) was probably reached by 360s. See work of Rodney Stark. Paganus did not mean “hick.” See Alan Cameron, Last Pagans of Rome. Theodosian legislation only formalized what was already in effect.

2 - . . . a clever student got himself elected to the city council, went behind the mayor's back and got a referendum on the ballot when the university was in session. Passed overwhelmingly, and the income it generated transformed the city into someplace almost liveable, with nice restaurants, etc.

1 - Gotta disagree with you here. The campus where I work was for ages in a dry town and the old city fathers wanted to keep it that way, so every time a change to the liquor laws came up for a vote, they made sure it was on the ballot when the university was not in session--until . . .
