With yesterday's clouds and calm winds, of course I was out shooting waterfalls. It seems like we're still a couple weeks from peak foliage in Connecticut, but there were pockets of color here and there. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut
A waterfall with two side by side sections into a deep, shaded pool at its base. The foliage above is just starting to turn autumn yellow and there are fallen leaves on the ground surrounding the pool.

I've photographed Háifoss several times, so during my most recent visit to the area, I decided to focus on Granni instead. The recent rains had things flowing well and the low clouds added a softening element to the scene. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography

The waterfall that I affectionately call Skógafoss Junior looking great on a cloudy September day. At 65 feet tall, it's only about 1/3 the height of the real Skógafoss, but with lots fewer visitors. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography

The valley of Botnsá near the Glymur waterfall seemed to be the epicenter of autumn color in Iceland with birch trees putting on quite the show. Glymur is the main attraction here, but this scene ended up being one of my favorites. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography

Iceland has a lot of spectacular waterfalls, but this pair is near the top of the list for me. The scene makes me marvel at how nature could create something so beautiful. To help with scale, I estimate the upper drop to be ~50-60 feet. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography
I dramatic two-tiered waterfall drops in tight canyon of moss-covered basalt into turquoise pools below.

I had visited Hraunfossar a few times before - but never in fall - and all I can say is "wow". The autumn yellows and reds take this place to another level of beauty. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography
Small birch trees with their foliage in autumn yellow sit above a brown rock face with many small threads of water spilling from it into a turquoise-colored river below.

I'll have new Iceland work to share over the next few weeks - here's something to kick things off. I'm not sure which I like more: waterfalls or sunset skies. Once in a while, I don't have to choose! #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography

From time to time, I go back to older photos to try to improve them. I love this composition of Ófærufoss but realized my original edit was heavy-handed with a saturation adjustment, so I created this version that I think is truer to life. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography

On the way to Mjóifjörður, the waterfalls of Klifbrekkufossar descend a hillside. They are a unique sight, but capturing them all in one image can't match seeing them in person. For this composition, I focused on the lowermost waterfall. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography

Gates of Geirlandsá I love how the bend in the river and stone gate make such a perfect lead-in to Fagrifoss, one of my favorite waterfalls in Iceland. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall

I’ve shared a couple non-traditional images from Kent Falls. Now here’s the classic view of the waterfall steps from the bottom of the gorge. It had been raining on and off and there was a slight fog at the top. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut

Here’s a small waterfall for those of you who are staying in this Saturday like I am. I liked this section of the creek best because of the tree at the left and how the water navigated over the foreground rocks. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut

I've visited this location when there was much more water in the creek. While that can be impressive, the lighter flow on this day made it easier to appreciate the moss-covered rock and surrounding details. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut

You never know what you’ll find in the woods of Connecticut. I estimate the combined drop of these two waterfalls as only ~15 feet, but I think what they lack in height, they make up for in overall interest. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut

The way I do it is to look for creeks that pass through areas with very tight contour lines. Often the best waterfall gorges are the ones that have the “U” shape like in the photo below. That said, there are some very large and famous waterfalls that would not be able to be identified like this.
Example of a topographic map with tight contour lines.

One of the things I love most about waterfall hunting is that while you may suspect a waterfall will be there due to the topo map, you never know what it will look like until you arrive. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut

It’s a bit difficult to tell, but the upper ~1/4 of this Connecticut waterfall is spilling over a man-made stone wall. I assume this may date back to a time when the creek was used to provide power. #timothykeeneyphotography #photography #landscapephotography #waterfall #connecticut
I graceful waterfall spills over a moss-covered stone wall on top of a naturally-occurring ledge and into a shallow pool below. There is a large, partially submerged downed tree trunk perpendicular to the waterfall and green foliage hangs above the scene.

Connecticut’s public lands are full of small waterfalls like this, which is part of what makes exploring them so rewarding.
