Great work! Last week Juliane Entzian (@j-entz.bsky.social) and Melanie Habermann (@mhab.bsky.social) represented our group at the Topic 6 Symposium 2026 at GEOMAR. Topic 6 is one branch of the Helmholtz research area 'Changing Earth - Sustaining our Future' with focus on Marine and Polar Life.

I am sure you will write a great thesis... you did such good work and are super smart - so all reason to believe in yourself and trust that this will work out well!

A key finding: depending on the network's structural properties, the "inferior" opinion (with the lower spontaneous flipping rate) can achieve local dominance in some communities. This demonstrates a structural mechanism for how minority opinions can be preserved.

A network graph visualizing opinion distribution across connected communities. Nodes represent communities and vary in size to indicate the total local population (X_i + Y_i). Node colors designate the local opinion majority: orange nodes indicate opinion Y is dominant (X < Y), while blue nodes indicate opinion X is dominant (X > Y). The vast majority of the network is composed of orange nodes. However, a distinct, interconnected cluster of five blue nodes in the bottom-left corner visually demonstrates a localized pocket where the global minority opinion (X) has successfully achieved local dominance.

We model this as a reaction-diffusion system on a #Network. Nodes represent communities where individuals hold one of two opinions, updating them through two mechanisms: spontaneous flipping or social interaction.

A schematic diagram illustrating the mechanisms of an opinion dynamical network model. Section (I) depicts spontaneous opinion flipping between state X (blue) and state Y (orange) governed by transition rates. Section (II) shows opinion adjustment via influence, where a single blue agent adopts the orange opinion after interacting with two orange agents. The bottom graphic displays a network of connected communities, represented by pie charts indicating the local ratio of opinions, with individual agents migrating between these nodes.

My master's thesis got published in Physical Review E🥳! Thanks to @thilogross.bsky.social for the supervision. We develop a meta-community opinion model and use a master stability function approach to find conditions where pattern formation facilitates diversity. Read here: arxiv.org/abs/2508.15377

Mind the gap! Next stop: Biodiversity Theory Our working group just digitized our research landscape using a classic London Tube map design. Every line is a team member; every station is a core topic or application we tackle. Check it out and see where our work interconnects!

Table with each station name in alphabetical order. For each station or topic we are working on is a list with the initials of the group member you can reach out to. Unfortunately, the list is too long to post it here in the alt text, but if you have questions and want to reach out, the DMs are open.
Check out the map below to see how our ideas interconnect!
