A new Special Collection in the Journal of Medical Entomology shares advancements in understanding Culicoides, or biting midges. This important but understudied vector species plays a role in disease transmission in both animals and humans. 🔗 academic.oup.com/jme/pages/sp... @academic.oup.com
The graphic includes the logos for Oxford University Press and the Journal of Insect Science as well as white text on an red background that says “New Special Collection. Culicoides” and “read now.” There is also an image of a biting midge.

Oestridae are really neat. I worked on a cattle grub project as a student. I've seen horses with bot eggs and their legs. I have seen adult Cuterebra in my backyard and camping. I have pictures of rodent bot infested mice and chipmunks, and once extracted a 5 gram larvae from a <15 gram mouse.

I am largely against attempts to hire US scientists in non-US countries. We should be hiring our own first.

If have have a professor of rare moths in your life, give them some time to go looking for moths because today is mother's day.

Small cream-colored moth on a white sheet, some of its wing veins geometrically blocked off in black, with a red dot in an open area of the wing.

He MAGA style politics are creeping north, epecially into Alberta. We have a provincial government that is very friendly to him because of their allegiance to the oil industry. And a bunch of people who are trying to separate from Canada so they join the US.

I haven't read this paper. It suggests this louse is an IH for a heartworm. It was in the journal of Medical and Veterinary Entomology in 1991. Title "The louse Trinoton anserinum (Amblycera: Phthiraptera), an intermediate host of Sarconema eurycerca (Filarioidea: Nematoda), a heartworm of swans"

I was camping in southern Alberta that weekend. Knew nothing about the eruption. On the Monday, we drove through Waterton Lakes National Park, and the air was so full of ash I couldn't even see the mountains across the lake. Had no idea what had happened until we got back to Lethbridge that evening.
