Yeah, looking into it again, it looks like they were described as 'dog like, with scaly, hairless skin' in a D+D monster manual, then camps emerged took the 'dog-like' and ignored the rest (wizardry, Japan) or took the scaly and ran with that (D+D from 3rd ed on). Mythologically they are just gnomes

yeah I'm interested in the "geneology" of critter depictions; I read something about how dog kobolds comes from wizardry + has more mythological grounding than I thought. But they are basically just dog-flavored "beastmen", way less interesting than shitty lizards with a chip on their shoulder imo
