He adjusted his spatial coordinates to set himself in front of Jayce, still kneeling, and rocked back onto his heels so that his eyes were even with Jayce’s stone face.
Viktor had no idea where to start but desperation guided his hand. He closed his eyes and sank into the arcane realm, staring out at the constellations of golden souls before him. A faint thread trailed off into the distance, anchored weakly to the physical form in front of him. Viktor grasped at the thread and yanked, hard, feeling the force travel down the line like that of a fault in the earth.
He isn’t dead. He can’t be. I’ll get him back.
Jayce’s words echoed in Viktor’s ears. For all he knew, Viktor had heard Jayce whisper them as he wrote during Viktor’s time in the chrysalis. They repeated until Viktor realized the voice speaking them was his own, layered over with his old human tone.
I can’t live in a world where he’s gone.

Summary: Rioth was going to rise to mate soon, which meant Viktor was fucked.
Well, if he’d been home at the crafthold, there would certainly have been other dragons from the nearby Weyr for Rioth to mate with and then both they and Viktor would be getting fucked, the back of his mind supplied helpfully. Viktor groaned and ran a shaking hand down his face. Here he was, trapped in the middle of nowhere with a dragon that had decided to go into heat eight Turns late with no other sapient beings around to do anything about it.

or: Viktor's dragon, Rioth, had never risen to mate in all the Turns they'd been bonded. It wasn't the only unusual thing about them, but neither minded. One morning, something was different...
