I’m quoting from memory, but somewhere in one of his books, Dietrich Bonhoeffer says to a pastor, ‘God did not call you to this church so that you could become its accuser.’ I often forget that one, but I try not to.

The UCP Government is running these referenda. But the UCP government is also arguing for one side on most of the questions. How is that remotely ethical? Where’s the balanced guide that makes the case for both sides? It galls me that my tax dollars are used to pay for this.

David Cameron thought staying in power by offering extremists in his party a separation referendum was a good idea. Danielle Smith thinks staying in power by offering extremists in her party a separation referendum is a good idea. Hmm.

I'm often troubled when this text is read. 1. How is the authentic message of Jesus good news for the poor, release to the captives etc.? 2. How are we living out that message today? Or is it just too radical for us modern Jesus-followers?

When I began writing about my fictional community of Meadowvale, I was strongly influenced by Wendell Berry's 'Port William' novels. I was inspired by the way he could describe Port William in such a way that *the community itself* almost became a character in the stories.
