Kodai Senga would like to be a starter, but he knows he doesn't have much to back him up: "The team could tell me, 'Just look at your stats,' and I don't have anything to say back to them."
[what were your thoughts when the team told you it wanted to try you as a one-inning reliever?]

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to pitch in situations like that. At the same time, I made sure to tell the team that I signed as a starter and starting is something I would like to do. But I also understand my results and my stats don’t show that I necessarily deserve a starting rotation spot. Whatever position I'm put in, whatever role I'm given, I'm happy to do and will continue to do the best I can.

[do you think you'll get an opportunity to start again this season?]

"Whatever role is given to me, I'm going to throw in that role. Regardless what I say, if I say I want to be a starter, the team could tell me, 'Just look at your stats,' and I don’t have anything to say back to them. Whatever role is given to me, I'm going to continue to perform, continue to prepare and I hope to continue along this path and have a long career ahead of me.

Carson Benge on The Bird:
[what was your reaction to the bird?]

"I don't know. I just looked down and looked around, like, 'Is anyone gonna grab this? Does anyone see this?' No one was looking at it, so I wasn’t about to stop the game for it. I was just sitting there eating it, and then someone saw it and I was like, 'Are you gonna pick this up?' They were chanting for me to pick it up. No.

[did you see it go down?]

"I don't know. I heard a thud, and I looked over. It was just down for the count.

[did you think it was like an omen?]

"Nah, I'm not superstitious, and it worked out.

Some context on the Mets’ early spring cuts from this morning:
Furthermore, players on the 40-man roster with little chance to make the Opening Day roster are often optioned relatively early in camp; that’s because if they get hurt in camp, they end up on the major-league IL and accrue service time. (Think of Bryce Montes de Oca requiring Tommy John surgery a few springs ago.) That’s why Ross, Pintaro, Carrillo and outfielder Nick Morabito have all been optioned already.

Carlos Beltrán asked whether his preference is to wear a Mets cap on his HOF plaque:
“I will make the decision with my wife, my kids. I’ll have to make sure how the Hall of Fame process works. I haven't been able to get there yet. I want to ask them what are my options and also make a decision.
“There’s no doubt that the Mets are a big part of my identity as a player. There were a lot of times, almost seven years in that organization, I got there with a big contract, and being able to stay with the team as an advisor with the baseball club, there’s no doubt the Mets have a lot of weight with that decision.

David Stearns, yesterday, on the prices in free agency:
"It's always difficult to tell midstream exactly where the free-agent market is. It's a little more helpful to look at it in retrospect. Every year I've been around the game, at some point in the offseason there is a cry of inflationary free agency, and then at some point in the offseason there's this worry that a bunch of players aren't going to be paid what they deserve or have jobs. This seems to be the natural cycle of the baseball offseason, and I imagine we'll experience both of those over the course of the next few months.

On the end of summer: www.nytimes.com/athletic/585...
LOS ANGELES — And in the end, the playoff pumpkin settled at the bottom of a blue trash can in the visitors clubhouse at Dodger Stadium, nestled among bottles of Pacifico and Presidente, its magic expired two wins shy of the World Series.

Late Sunday night, the lights went out on a Mets summer that lasted long enough to know the autumn chill. New York will next play next spring, with a different roster, different vibes and different expectations.

Dodgers 10, Mets 5, the pennant to Los Angeles.

Alas, the season nobody saw coming ended in a way nobody saw fit.

“We didn’t want to lose,” Mark Vientos said. “We wanted to keep going, we wanted to win the World Series. That was the plan. It sucks.”

“No one,” Jesse Winker said, “envisioned it ending.”

Loved how much Ryne Stanek appreciated Sean Manaea's outing, especially the last part of it: "That was Big Boy Shit."
“That was Big Boy Shit. We thought he might have been done, he took the ball again, finished the inning and even went back out again.
“He kept everything in check — physically, mentally, emotionally. Even when the big moments happen, he got out of that with the double play. The craziest thing is you have that huge burst of adrenaline and emotion in that situation, to be able to come back out and execute at a high level, that’s something that I don’t want to get lost. That was an absolutely incredible display of keeping your emotions in check. I don't know if the fans at home or in the stands will appreciate that enough. It is so hard to have that emotional release and go back out and still keep yourself under control. That was, to me, the coolest moment of the game, by far. I loved it.
“It’s hard to ask him to do more. That was six zeroes. It’s hard to ask him to do more — and he fucking did it. That was awesome. That’s the shit that gets me fired up.
