Trump admin's new rule adding prohibitively expensive new fees for "OPT"—temporary work authorization program for international students and new grads in the United States—is out. Would require colleges to pay $70,000 for year one. $30,000 for years two and three combined for STEM fields.

The attendance yesterday at the Uni Fair was 25% lower than the year previous. It was abnormally quiet when I walked through too. Also the last number of presidents and provosts I’ve ever seen in attendance.

I only have one award to award and it is to the university of Ottawa. Recruiters/faculty/admin all wore the colour T-shirts of the banner above them. Excellent decision. No notes.

Making the executive decision to go back to dedicating at least 50% of my online presence to food. Rhum Corner. Haitian street food. 8.2/10. Griot was a strong 10.

Also did you know you can get a “boneless couch”???? Like a boneless nugget, but a couch!!! (It now needs 72 hours to poof)

Unfortunately, primarily for me, “I can’t do that” is almost never an option (even when it is drag 100 lbs of couch up the stairs)

Bluesky as a university dormitory: you wander the halls overhearing snippets of ridiculous conversations, some folks are studying, some watching sports, tankies are tanking, foodies are fooding. People up past their bedtimes. Sometimes, you overhear a truly great joke. Everyone is procrastinating.

@bakerdphd.bsky.social l @cantb.bsky.social al Canada used to be almost only domestic vs. international tuition, but there are more and more in-province, out-of-province differentials cropping up. I will simply sum up my thoughts on this by saying: I don't like it!

Now there's a grim chart. May I never screw up so bad that it can be summarized as 'intended change' versus 'actual result' in large unfriendly red bars.

A bar chart showing that actual results were much lower than intended changes in new study permit approvals, especially in smaller provinces.

The federal government *dramatically overcompensated* for abuse by some colleges in international student visas, and now Canada's long-term prosperity and its university systems both get to suffer unnecessarily as a result.

It is completely reasonable to email your dean and/or Provost to ask what is being done at your university to stop this from happening to your students

NS government hired a US company (Huron) to help do a review of university programs. Cost 400K. It did not bother to check whether Huron's methodology was compatible with local data collection practices (it wasn't). Now Huron is trying to get unis to pay them to improve their data collection.

Here's the biggest PSE story you haven't heard yet: the Canada Student Grant for low-income students is being cut from $4200/year to $3000/year as of next August. It's implicit in the budget tables but the government is too chickenshit to actually say so directly.
