Just the dumbest collection of halfwit confetti emerging out of that conference. Tax cuts everywhere, paid for with imaginary spending cuts. Huge spending projects with precisely zero utility, except to anchor their 'defence day' narrative. Clowns.

Dear Donald, if you are found guilty then you can tell the judge of all the achievements you claim in your mitigation. But those alleged achievements are irrelevant as to your guilt or innocence.

Be under no illusion: this is a significant victory for everyone who stuck their neck out and defended jury trials, day after day, clause by clause. But it is not a comprehensive victory. Magistrates should not be allowed to send people to prison for two years.

In 1979, Thatcher cut the top rate of income tax from 83% to 60%, then to 40%. She funded this not through economic growth but through a one-off windfall: N Sea oil taxes generated £52.4 billion in six years, revenue that had been virtually non-existent before. @mrjameskay.bsky.social @lbc.co.uk

Reminds me of BBC TV programme on Big Bang v steady state universe. A priest / physicist approached Einstein saying the Maths favoured Big Bang. Einstein dismissed him with contempt. Later, the priest / physicist was vindicated. Thus was science reconciled with the biblical story of creation!

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...
