My 'watch every recent Guy Ritchie film while cooking roast dinners' streak continues. I just think maybe I fundamentally don't understand what any of these films actually are. the tone is just so strange. this is a kind of spy comedy I guess? with a hollywood satire twist? Hugh Grant is in it?

This has some of the most Guy Ritchie dialogue I have ever heard. Krasinki just had to deliver the lines “don’t you tell me your primal curiosities are not piqued by the great mysteries!” and “that is the exotic aroma of danger” with a straight face

Here are some books I've read recently. I realised I can use alt text to write longer thoughts on them. Most of these were read while I was in the hospital so there's a lot of fantasyslop, but I defy anybody to “be in the mood for Intermezzo” with a plastic tube crammed up their urethra

Bought some lettuce from Sainsbury’s and it is literally covered in little bugs. Inedible. But yet, only 85p and they’re not even on Bluesky so not even worth complaining about really. Like what am i gonna do take it back and get my 85p back. And yet. One of life’s little irritations

What…
The Riddle of the Two
Guardsby Nathan Panning
This puzzle is inspired by the old riddle where two doors are blocked by two guards, of whom one always tells the truth and one always lies. Here, each clue is really two clues written by two guards: the definition is true in one clue and a lie in the other.
Solvers must determine which guard's clues lead to answers in the left hand side of the grid, and which guard's clues lead to answers in the right side.
Answers 7, 9, 15 provide a yes-no question that one of the guards answers 'no. Depending on whether its unchecked squares are filled, 20 will be either a description of a guard or a statement of an ability solvers have using 7.9, 15.

They're calling it the most ChatGPT amazon review of all time
Some books remind you exactly why you fell in love with epic fantasy in the first place—and The Will of the Many is absolutely one of them.

From its astonishing world-building to its relentlessly gripping narrative, this book is designed to be devoured. The setting is richly imagined and distinctive, drawing heavily on ancient influences and weaving them seamlessly with a fascinating magic system that feels both powerful and earned. Every layer of the world feels intentional, immersive, and alive.

What truly sets this story apart is its narrative structure and character work. The perspective shifts are handled with remarkable confidence, creating constant momentum and tension. Each transition left me desperate to keep reading, often feeling like a cliffhanger had been dropped right in my lap. It’s rare to find a book that can juggle complexity while remaining this compelling, but Islington makes it feel effortless.

The cast is expansive yet engaging, and the central character’s journey is utterly absorbing. There’s a sense of scale and ambition here that never overshadows the emotional pull of the story—it enhances it.

It’s been a long time since a book kept me this invested, this excited, and this eager to turn the next page. The Will of the Many is epic fantasy firing on all cylinders, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves immersive worlds, high stakes, and stories that refuse to let you go.

One of those annoying ones with no numbers that mean you have to cold-solve 90% of it before you can put any in. Anyway, extra letters tell us to highlight NAME OF COMPANY PRODUCING THE FIVE DRINKS, the drinks (our unclued entires) being products of OAKHAM ALES, hidden diagonally in the grid
getting walloped by kruger

clues are iven in alphabetical order of their answers which must be entered where they will fit, although seven thematic entries (involving two pairs) are uncled. each clue contains an extra word of at least four letters tha tmsut gbe removed to enable solving. the position of the word within the clue indicates the position of the required letter within taht word that collectively, in normal clue order, iddentify what must be highlighted in the completd grid crossword grid

Interesting is that the hero here has no deeper trauma or personal connection to the case at all. When we open he's a regular guy who lies to his wife about smoking, and that's it really. If this film was made nowadays we'd eventually learn that mum was also killed in a snuff film or something

Thom @thwphipps.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
They don't make em like this any more (for better & worse): Nic Cage as a smarmy PI who ventures into the seedy underbelly of 90s LA looking for the "star" of a snuff film. Starts off moody & atmospheric, becomes increasingly silly as the gang of evil mincing crossbow-wielding pornographers shows up
