even now, i don’t think anyone comes back to look at work i’ve done, commercial or not, and i kind of just post to the void. it just hit me as i was looking at everyone’s art being shared, “wow i don’t think i ever made anyone feel like this” and i just wonder when i lost that or if i ever had it

i also find that you don’t really get hired for the projects that suit your style, so in reality it’s just better to show you can do a range of things early on. tbh, i’m not sure any of my takes on things ever stood out, and i probably wasn’t really suited for commercial work!

i think when you’re starting out, you often get the advice to draw what you love, but that only really works if you’re keeping it as a hobby. you’re not going to be your only client, so at some point you have to branch out and do things you’re less excited about.

ah thank you! i used to have a Genki textbook years ago, I may have to repurchase it. I still have the workbook at least! So far the Wagotabi game is fun and does a really nice job explaining, but i do think i need to start writing things down and maybe some flash cards!

i just started an RPG style game called Wagotabi and in 10 minutes or so they already explained sentence structure in the simplest way possible! it’s been great so far! i think this and the Anki deck sound the most promising.

and tbh the only way i retain some kanji is because of people’s names, for example 山下幸樹, so Yama/Shita/Kou/Ki or 八村倫太郎 is Hachi/Mura/Rin/Taro which is nice for sight reading but i don’t know the meaning of some of them so that doesn’t help either…
