Do I want to go back to May, 2020? Absolutely not. But I was just reminded of this story … it was maybe the most fun I've had doing "journalism". I still have some of this nonsense. (Also: strap in, this sort of thing might be baseball journalism again in 2027) www.nytimes.com/athletic/182...

Everyone in the baseball is running on adrenaline, fumes and [whatever desperate chemical cocktail it is that runs through animal brains when they are about to die] right now. Here, for one example, is a transcript of Phillies radio at the end of the bottom of the fourth inning:

Six outs from elimination, the Phillies dug deep and willed a win. They are still alive
The Phillies' 4-3 win over the Braves was one of their greatest playoff comebacks. They will play October baseball — for at least one day.

My favorite thing about Chris Sale is that guy who once cut up uniforms he didn’t like, who still touches 100 at 37 years old, who looks like he was just rescued from a remote mountain cabin, adorned in bear hide & mad at being found …routinely makes a body shape reminiscent of Stuart from MadTV
No idea how to describe this???? Ok uhhh let’s see… he just threw a pitch (it was 100mph btw) and is balancing on his right foot with his left foot and left arm strewn behind him as if to say LOOKWHATICANDO

Watching the MLB Network reruns, and Harold Reynolds suggests that tomorrow around this time, batters are going to have a horrible time in Atlanta because of those shadows. Greg Amsinger points out that there's a batting cage there?? that won't be there?? tomorrow?? Reynolds: "That's a good point"
a picture of my tv featuring phillies hitters taking bp and boy are those shadows bad. but fear not, they're actually gonna take the cage off the field for the game.

Cool as these Verlander /Scherzer moments were, I can’t stop thinking what a bummer it is that the Blue Jays and Tigers were hoth supposed to be playoff contenders and both went fully wheels-off this year.

This is correct! My mistake. I hope he throws 140 (and then comes back and pitches next year too)

Would it be too much to ask the Tigers to score a few tiny little runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates on a bullpen day?

If that’s Verlander’s last strikeout, the fact it was four inches outside and called strike three by Laz Diaz, with both teams out of challenges would be … I’m not sure the right word? Funny???

Ok ok ok we have all made the Billy Chapel joke this week but now let’s just let Justin Verlander have a normal final outing okay (He goes 1-2-3 in the first)

Very weird situation, but true for now: Guardians: 82-76, have not clinched playoff spot White Sox: 82-77, have clinched playoff spot It's because of tiebreakers, but I am not going to spend 20 minutes figuring it out, because if Cleveland wins tonight, it's moot. If they lose, I'll do the math

No way I can recreate this for film, but I’m watching DBacks/Rockies on one screen and Mets/Rangers on the other … and suddenly I hear the stadium-PA cowbell clap-clap-clap thing, and it’s precisely in sync, from both devices at once, in stereo.

The MLB app has heard my pleas and is trying something new tonight. Literally every half-inning as it goes to commercial, it freezes. This is on every device, even after reinstalls. This is just what it does now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Amazing experience. Five stars (preferably nearby supernovas)

Here is a thread with all the playoff scenarios. I think. First, what's settled: Rays: AL East champs, No. 1 seed in AL Yankees: AL No. 4 seed Red Sox: in the playoffs Dodgers: NL West champs Brewers: NL Central champs, first round bye Braves: NL East champs After that, it gets a little messy:

My work night usually starts around 6pm CT (EST games) and ends around 2 am, watching highlights as I finish writing (to make sure I didn't miss anything) I'm only half-joking when I say: MLB's decision to play the same 4-5 commercials every ad break has contributed negatively to my mental health.

If I were prone to hot takes, I would say something like "It's not often the Yankees have the second-best uniforms at their own home games" I wouldn't actually fully mean that, but these new Rays road unis are excellent.

Laz Diaz is having a horrific bottom of the 10th inning in Anaheim. I haven't been counting how many ABS calls he's had overturned (I've been writing), but I think it's at least three

The Brewers became the first team to clinch their division in 2026, officially, when the Cubs’ loss to Atlanta went final. So the play that clinched it was Pete Crow-Armstrong lining out to a right fielder named … WHAT
Brewer Hicklen.

Clinched it for the Brewers.

Plays for the Braves.

Just watching my favorite normal sport
how do i even describe this? kyle tucker, in a blue jersey, is laying *more or less* on his stomach, left arm extended and touching third base. Finishing a barrel roll, Elly De La Cruz, in a white uniform, is entirely on top of Tucker's left shoulder, one leg atop the runner's head, the other leg extended into the air, holding his glove aloft to show a tag to the umpire, who is making an out call.

Meanwhile — correct me if I'm wrong, Rangers fans — the Rangers' broadcast has been off the air for at least the last 10-15 minutes. Just commercials-only on MLB app. "Weather delay" on BZZR app. This future is so much better than when we had to jump through hoops like "turning on a TV"

Both the White Sox and Guardians could: - Win the AL Central - Win the third Wild Card - Miss the playoffs entirely. Obviously, the best path forward for each is to win these head-to-head games, so tonight's game feels a little October-ish; Guards down one after Bazzana's second HR of the night.

for no good reason at all i looked it up to see if any former mlb players were born the same day as me (same year and everything) the answer is no, but i slot right in between eric hull (5 games in 2007 for dodgers) and ryan theriot (899 games for cubs/dodgers/cardinals/giants).

Baseball update: Anthony Gose (yes, the same Anthony Gose who broke into the league as an OF in 2012 but has been a pitcher since 2021) is not only back in the big leagues, but he has a very weird line for the Royals: 6.1 innings pitched, 1.42 ERA, 0.789 WHIP, and **zero strikeouts**

The Astros are only two games ahead of Texas. For peak chaos, why not a three-way tie for the division -AND- an eight-way tie for the last ALWC?

Absolutely rooting for a six-way tie, just for the sheer confusion of it
Rangers in third AL wild card spot

Blue Jays, Orioles, Tigers a half-game out, Twins, Guardians one game out.

2026 has been one of the most entertaining and intriguing regular seasons I can remember, following 2025 — one of the most entertaining postseasons I can recall. I can’t believe the league’s primary message to justify an upcoming lockout is “this all sucks, actually”

Emil Jiménez is at it again. Just did the same thing to Julio Rodriguez (denied timely challenge) Then the next half inning, did it AGAIN to one of the Rays, and 3B umpire Doug Eddings had to come overrule him. MLB has got to get a handle on this. www.nytimes.com/athletic/742...

Joey Bart coming out of the game. Playing catcher for the White Sox is simply a cursed job assignment this year; a deal with Mephistopheles: “You will not lose 100 games, and may even make the playoffs. But your catchers belong to me.”

My daughter (13) came in while I was writing about Yan & it gave me a chance to tell a baseball story to a kid who largely doesn’t care about the sport. She was thoroughly entertained, and I think that’s gonna be my answer to anyone who doesn’t like Yan’s antics Don’t care! He’s fun! Joy = good!
