Hyena looks fantastic but has precious little beneath the surface. The mystery is obvious within minutes, its sex-work setting feels oddly sanitised, and an erotic thriller without much eroticism or thrills has a fairly fundamental problem. #filmsky #FrightFest #Horrorsky #moviesky boxd.it/g8iDJP

Species takes aim at the idea that destroying yourself is simply part of having a serious career. The body horror is well done, if a little too set-piece driven, but it’s gripping throughout and lands a great sting in the tail. #filmsky #moviesky #horrorsky boxd.it/g7QHkD

A ½ review of Brooklyn 45 (2023)
Brooklyn 45 should be right up my street. Small cast, one location, séance setup, loads of potential for tension and some properly nasty turns. Instead, it just plods along like it’s got nowhere to be. The problem is simple. The characters are boring. You’re stuck with them the whole time, and there’s nothing about them that makes you care. So when the film leans hard into long conversations about guilt, war, and past relationships, it just feels like noise rather than anything meaningful. It’s clearly going for that slow-burn, dialogue-heavy vibe, but there’s no hook to keep you in it.
