In the meantime I got my first cell phone. When I went back, downtown was a warzone. I got waved through the first check point on my own reconnaissance. Second checkpoint my boss had to come out and clear me. Security was much different then. Eventually we walked up to Stuyvesant for credentials.

But there were buses...right. I walked down Atlantic Avenue a bit and found a stop for a bus that went to my neighborhood. That part of Brooklyn had many Middle Eastern stores and residents. I didn't see anyone that looked joyous. So none of that bullshit from me.

I knew I needed to get back to Brooklyn. Everything was ok there they said. I got on the FDR and made my way to the Brooklyn Bridge. At that point I found out that a tower had fallen. Let me tell you, I booked it across that bridge. I got to Brooklyn and found out Atlantic Station was closed.

When I got downstairs, I found out that the trains weren't running in Manhattan. Not why. Just that they stopped. Not understanding that the collapse had cut off the N/R line, and so many others. Someone had a radio and then reported stories were crazy. The Pentagon, White House, Congress all hit.

So, instead I ran to the Smithsonian across the street and tucked into a corner as I got showered with the tower (which I didn't know had fallen). I couldn't see anything but knew the subway was on the other side of the building. So I felt my way around as it settled and finally got in.

I walked along Battery Park. When I hit Broadway I heard jets scream overhead, heard a loud snap, and saw a wall of smoke and debris coming at me. The street cops were yelling at everyone to get in the park. In my mind it was a third strike and figured the park had gunmen waiting to kill.

My boss shut down the site and told us all to go home. Almost no one did, we all gathered outside the perimeter fence and watched the building burn, the pieces and the people fall. After a bit I couldn't stomach it any more and I decided to get my ass on the subway and go home.

It's hard for me to believe that 25 years has passed, all the memories and my young adulthood changed forever in that moment. The confusion, the shock, the memory of seeing the second strike and the panic of knowing that it wasn't a Cessna that had hit the first tower.

Friday was tough for me. I haven't discussed it here but I was six blocks south of the WTC, straight down the West Side Highway as part of the construction team building the BPC Ritz Carlton. I was 23, and hadn't lived in NYC for a full year. I had been at Decadence the week before.
