Through his detailed study of 1936 photographs, Joel asks us to think of Buttermilk Bottoms not as the "slum" that it was called prior to its demolition, but as a community of people who showed a great love for their place.

This is disappointing. A couple of years ago, Georgia-Pacific announced plans to convert much of its Downtown office tower to residential, including affordable units, plus a retail hub at ground level. Now they're scrapping the idea because of the expense. www.ajc.com/news/2026/09... 1/

A little over 14 years ago, Atlanta Beltline promised to "build transit within just a few short years" if the transportation tax was approved. Remind them of this at the Citywide Transportation Conversation tomorrow. See if they still intend to "fulfill the grassroots vision" 1/

This is an intersection in Atlanta's lovely Glenwood Park development, which was designed specifically to mimic the pedestrian-oriented streets and low-rise density from the days before automobiles began to rule our urban planning. 1/

Ugh. MARTA may have to reroute its new Bus Rapid Transit line for seven days because the City approved a permit for a Red Bull event for Formula 1 cars on Hank Aaron Drive in Summerhill. Obviously, residents are upset as well. 1/2

The chairman of Cox Enterprises, parent of the AJC, is using their news outlet to condemn Beltline rail. That's ridiculous. City leaders need to realize it as such. Arguing against rail transit in a city that's starved for its growth, and that is already funding it with a tax, is bad enough. 1/
"Future of Atlanta Beltline hangs in the balance. Trains are not the answer. Mayor Andre Dickens and city leaders are putting the finishing touches on this jewel, which should remain smart and green. To get around GA's ban on rent control, Atlanta has to offer developers an 'out' for inclusionary zoning (requiring affordable homes): paying in-lieu fees that go into a fund for building affordable homes elsewhere. The fees were recently increased, so that's good news.

Seems like adding all those lanes to the I-75/85 Connector didn't help anything, it just induced more traffic. An investment in more transit, plus compact growth (versus intense sprawl) would've been better. Yes, it's a utopian, urbanist dream. But dreams can grow up to become visions and plans. 1/

The cumulative amount of street-width needed to accommodate cars in a city is much larger than what's needed to carry the same number of people by transit. Making streets more efficient leaves space for great things like sidewalks, trees, vendors, bike lanes...city stuff!
