Working away while the sprogs watch tv. Suddenly heard reference to “harvest festival” and was rocketed back through time to my 1980s youth via this beautiful XTC song from 1999. Anyone remember bringing food (cans, veg) into school and making little “hampers” for the old folk in your community?

I think DOD really proved they could still do the spritely economic rockers without a drop in quality (‘Rainmaker’, ‘Wildest Dreams’, and - slightly longer - ‘Gates of Tomorrow’, ‘New Frontier’). I’d be happy with 6-7 or those, and 1 or 2 8 minuters!

THIS. 🤝🏻 Me and my bezzie have been saying this since at least The Final Frontier. And I’ve really been pushing this in my posts of the last month on here. I’ve enjoyed making tighter 50-minute versions of BNW, DOD, TFF in playlists. A 40 minute version of FOTD, even.

I did this whole review of both those albums on Facebook about a decade ago and formatted a single brilliant (imho) 75 min “Illusions” album and a series of EPs from the rest of it. 🤓 Can’t recall most of it. Probably a good thing.

This is silly on two counts, considering 1) The Wildhearts (whom I adore) were at peak-prog themselves with “Fishing For Luckies” (7, 8, 11 minute song lengths!), and 2) “prog” GNR is the best stuff. ‘November Rain’, ‘Coma’, ‘Estranged’, ‘Locomotive’, ‘Breakdown’!! All 🏆🏆🏆

I have a quote from Ginger Wildheart living rent free in my brain. I think it was in Kerrang! and it was part of a non-feature speculating on a follow-up to UYI 1&2. Perhaps circa. 1994/5. He says something like “I hope it’s a return to the Appetite sound, I don’t want prog rock from my GN’R”.
