Just read a fantastic line in Zelazny’s Guns of Avalon, the second book in the Chronicles of Amber: “You make the mistake, Eric, of considering yourself necessary.” You rarely see understated but cutting lines like that anymore #fantasy #booksky

Because I love fantasy I’m somewhat safe from the “lit bro” label, but Jesus, nothing is hitting the same since I finished Infinite Jest. Take me back #DFW

Huge thank you to the Queen of Grimdark herself, @annasmithspark.bsky.social, for taking the time to give me some advice on querying The Hollow Sky. Both The Court of Broken Knives and A Sword of Bronze and Ashes are beautiful, savage books, and well worth checking out.

Reading Infinite Jest and coming to the realisation that DFW was the closest thing to Mervyn Peake modern literature has produced. Both Enfield and Gormenghast are examined to the point of madness, and both are full of characters that are grotesque.

I loved Kaho, published in the New Yorker in 2024, so I’m delighted to hear Murakami’s next novel shares something of that story.

Loved this essay on Cheever and the New Yorker by @naokan.bsky.social. Reading long literary essays like this are like revisiting those arguments I had back when I was an MFA student. #booksky www.woman-of-letters.com/p/money-and-...

Great insight into one of the best to ever do it from her own son. Of particular insight is the point that she was capable of changing and understanding how she had changed (in a way few others are able to or willing to do.)

Curating a Show on My Ineffable Mother, Ursula K. Le Guin
I would never have proposed this exhibition in her lifetime. This is, after all, a writer who said in an interview, “Don’t shove me into your damn pigeonhole, where I don’t fit, because I’m all over.”

Vayal would have been chieftain, if it wasn’t for his brother’s betrayal. Now an arrogant exile and mercenary, he finds a way to restore his destiny: slaying the Creature, a shapeshifting demon that destroys villages. But the Creature is far more devious than he can imagine... #BluePit📖 #A #W #F
