Gone to Earth (1950) is a technical marvel, the colors are doing as much as the sets and the costumes and the score and even the actors to tell this story, so it can be heartily forgiven for trying to set up a love triangle that feels at times forced and at other times just flat out wrong.📽️

It was the CCC that brought Lawrence Adams all the way from his home in Schenectady to Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. That’s where he met Jewel Hixon, got married, and the two of them had a daughter. My mom, Mary, who would later work for TVA. So I’m grateful for not one, but two New Deal projects.

The Devils (1971) is a serious work of art that is spiritually profound and grounded in theology. Yes, the visuals are spectacular, the costumes are otherworldly, the set is mindblowing, the subject is unsettling, but all of it serves a purpose that can only be described as righteous.📽️

A digital illustration of a version of the big board from Wheel of Fortune. An array of green rectangles (each bearing an icon of a hand with crossed fingers inside a circle with rays), and white rectangles that indicate the letters in the secret phrase contestants are trying to guess. The board is not yet solved and reads like this:

M_YB_ I_
_ILL H_PP_N
__D_Y

Standing next to the board in a shiny pink and maroon evening gown and ready to turn around newly-guessed letters is a woman whose head is a human hand with crossed fingers.

Below the board in the space where viewers at home are informed what type of phrase is in play it simply reads ‘PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE’

A digital illustration based on a scene from the German Expressionist silent film Metropolis (1927). What we see is a robot woman seated in a chair, colored in gradated maroon shades. She's a shiny brass color in a sculptural art deco style staring implacably or incomprehendingly outward. Two sockets on either side of her head and many such other sockets on the chair have wires leading away out of frame. The background, colored in shades of blue is divided into radial sections with lightning bolt edges. (All these colors are purely notional as the source material is all black and white.)Around the chair and the robot are four sets of equally-spaced concentric triple rings or some sort of energy or electricity. Riding the top edges of these rings is jaggedy, electric lettering reading 'Maybe it will happen today'.
