Book of the week - Silk Mirage: Through the Looking Glass in Uzbekistan, by @joannalillis.bsky.social. In 2002, I travelled across Central Asia, including Uzbekistan (& it was the focus of my MA thesis), so it was great to dive back into an absolutely fascinating country with this great book.

Canada has zero influence on human rights in Saudi Arabia & any moralizing/lecturing will only make Riyadh push Canada away. If Canada wants to diversify its partnerships, that means sometimes putting human rights aside. If not, it means restricting diversification efforts to a handful of countries.
