I took a road trip from Chicago to New England three weeks ago. Gas stations on the Ohio turnpike had established fuel limits. Gas prices went up 70% in the two weeks I was gone. I can’t even being to describe the diesel prices. And nice dig, Pete ✊🏾🤣

One Sunday, I was getting ready for Mass and running late (as usual). VP Cheney was explaining to Tim Russert that the American military would be “greeted as liberators”. I screamed at the TV, “BY WHOM?!? ASK BY WHOM, TIM!!!” “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce.” —K. Marx

The bravest person in Congress is Democratic Rep. Al Green. He always speaks truth to power as he did last night during the fascist State of the union holding up a sign to Trump's face that read "BLACK PEOPLE AREN'T APES!" He was ejected from the State of the Union for daring to defy Trump!

Apparently because of a severe self-consciousness about public speaking, Thomas Jefferson simply wrote his address and sent it over to Congress. Presidents did it that way until Thomas Woodrow Wilson went back to personally delivering in front of Congress.

Respectfully, I think there is a significant divide between how elected Dems in Washington, and elected Dems in the rest of the country, are viewing this. I would not presume that DC Dems can accurately speak for how Dem candidates and voters are feeling and acting at this stage.

The worry keeping me awake: what happens to this…paramilitary force…when the order comes to disband them? From Colombia to Iraq, many reach for Pompey Magnus, “Cease quoting laws to those with swords girt about our loins.” Right after they reach for their arms.

Frost: For so long, the right wing has held up patriotism as a vibe, as an aesthetic. But patriotism is more than bald eagles and flags and beer. Patriotism is about loving the people who live in the damn country — every single one of them.

A Washington Post article suggests that, beyond a certain threshold, larger homes don't make people happier. Instead, well-being is correlated with affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods where they feel socially connected. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
Excerpt reads: "Prioritize your neighborhood
Neighborhoods drive our happiness (or unhappiness) more than we think.

When Lina Martinez, director of POLIS, the Center for Wellbeing Studies at Universidad Icesi in Colombia, studied the happiness of households in the city of Cali, she couldn’t find much difference between poorer and richer areas. “Their happiness is pretty much the same,” she said. But that changed when she isolated neighborhood conditions, such as access to transit, health care and parks. “The conditions of the neighborhood affect happiness,” she said. “I can’t link that to the space where [people] live.”

That aligns with findings from a 2023 study of the Vancouver metro area: Researchers found no significant differences in well-being between people living in single detached homes, duplexes, townhouses, laneway houses and apartment buildings (basement units smaller than 300 square feet were the only negative exception). What did people say they missed most in their neighborhood? Affordability, proximity to family and friends, and a sense of community. Home design was eighth on the list."

I was very much influenced in my thinking by Benjamin F. Martin’s “France in 1938” and William Shirer’s “The Collapse of the Third Republic,” that the defeat of the French military was given, once the political and social structures had “given up”. It was a mass socio-political suicide.
