This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026I agree with you but this is a technical issue here that is just coincidental with them bending the knee 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026But even if they didn’t, that change on the map would have happened 🤷🏼♂️ It’s not CEO who decide it And it’s just a lake and is a big issue because it’s Trump A joke compared to Derry/Londonderry issue or renaming 50% of streets in Poland because were “too lefty” 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Also other small companies did that change already… just by updating sources. And MapQuest is just doing PR stund as “resistors” just because… they don’t even use that database so 🤷🏼♂️ 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026I have inserted myself because as much as I don’t like Google for example, I know how it works from technical side, and there is no one who just budged there. Previously (according to PBS) they refused to rename Gulf of Mexico until it shows up in GNIS database. Just because they do not control it 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026In the UK I see English Channel, when Imm in France or Poland… it’s La Manche But used to be Mare Britannicum 🤷🏼♂️ 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026If it’s in documents then it is official. As much as I hate it, it will be a source of truth for any legal reason. And official databases are the source for mapping companies. Not only big corporations. Also… no one really cares about that change outside of US. We se whatever we call it 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Unfortunately it doesn’t work nowadays that way that someone just manually decides what to import to the map or what not. It is flawed and infuriating in cases like this, but we expect maps to have the most up to date info Some companies sync data more often than once per hour. 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026They don’t listen to him I would blame just an overeager clerk or director in US GNIS that changed it just like that. Plenty of much smaller companies in other countries do the same. Just automatically pull countries official data. No matter what is in them 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026MapQuest can be a hero but they didn’t have to do anything. They use crowdsourced maps and TomTom. They don’t do the heavy lifting of reconciliation of official sources themselves. They still automaticaly pull data multiple times a day from those sources. If sources change it… 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026If it’s official an new name it will change on documents sooner or later and then it will cause a lot of problems for users who have to remember (or know at all) that that official name doesn’t exist on the map. 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026They have been doing this always In other countries. Updating names changed in spite of other countries (my Poland renaming Russian Kaliningrad to Krolewiec - an old Polish name - just to piss them off). Even simple issues like privacy discrepancies between countries cause massive technical issues 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Even if a map shows other name it still needs to allow user to search the alternative one. In case they have no idea about controversy (tourist). Especially with town or street names. Maybe not the case in such big case, plus no one outside cares about local US changes anyway. 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Kinda works this way For example Maps.me uses different sources for different types of map So on a regular map they have Gulf of Mexico, but switching to topographical map it shows Gulf of America. Same with local or other language names. Köln (DE) Kolonia (PL) Cologne (EN) 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Agree But those databases contain zillions of other important and legitimate updates. And if not updated, companies risk that their maps diverge from “official” and it just becomes inconvenient for users. sad reality :( Openstreet Maps (one of MapQuest sources) are sometimes useless if outdated 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Problem with community driven maps is … inconsistency and maps being too local. Look at this on OpenStreet Maps. Unusable for most foreigners Plus they decided not to display Gulf of Mexico at all 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026… and sooner or later will start causing problems when other maps won’t recognise new name and people will try to navigate to a place a map “doesn’t know about”. 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026It is only locally Outside US no one cares about name change :) Also, all the national databases and naming committees emerged at some point so people would agree on one name. Otherwise maps are a bit useless. So as much as change is stupid it made it to an official register… 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Also if I’m not mistaken, MapQuest is pulling data from OpenStreet Map data mostly but also TomTom and others) Multiple times a day. So if any of the vendors pulls the update, it will end up there too 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Good, but it might soon mean outdated maps (there are other sensible changes) and that’s not what users want or need. Reason why Google and Apple maps are popular is data quality and how up to date they are :/ Who knows if MapQuest isn’t just doing a PR stunt showing their inertia as resistance. 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Also, look that many countries are represented multiple times in that table 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026What was your point exactly? :) Not sure what you wanted to prove. Best national players usually follow the money. Most end up in one of top 3 leagues. And these are very competitive with relegation systems. Not sure how exactly did you prove the opposite 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026“most top European clubs (Man City, Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG, etc.) play both their domestic league and the UEFA Champions League, so a large share of World Cup players are simultaneously “league X + Champions League” players.” 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026MapQuest refuses to pull the update 100 0

This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Can your teams be thrown out of league if they don’t do well in the season? :) 110 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026As much as change is stupid, it is in official datasets that map companies pull to generate their maps. Apart from small error fixes (mostly business names and locations etc), no one is manually entering names 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026All is automatic and depends on what datasource is used. Same company may even use different data sources or just update some less frequently. None of them ever controls names manually. They have to match whatever is officially recognised by local government providing data. 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026It’s just an automatic update from official US GIS data sources. None of those companies ever controls data manually. They just pull wholesale official data. The only to blame is some eager officials from US mapping service 100 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026Not pressure. Map services don’t control names manually. They pull massive datasets from whatever local governments source they have. They just have to be accurate with official naming. Blame eager US mapping authorities that change it and that was automatically pulled www.pbs.org/newshour/nat...pbs.orgLake Ontario to 'Lake America': Who gets to decide what goes on maps?A geographer explains the politics and procedures behind renaming American places. 000 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026No app changes names manually All of them pull wholesale data from whatever local governments source they have. On UK maps we have English Channel, on French maps you see La Manche 🤷🏼♂️ 010 0
This One Ate Seven @thisoneateseven.antifascists.space · 03/09/2026PBS has a really nice article about how it works www.pbs.org/newshour/nat... Companies don’t control map naming manually (apart from minor updates from users, but mostly locations and business names). Just pull data from local governments’ datasets.
