I have inserted myself because as much as I don’t like Google for example, I know how it works from technical side, and there is no one who just budged there. Previously (according to PBS) they refused to rename Gulf of Mexico until it shows up in GNIS database. Just because they do not control it

Problem with community driven maps is … inconsistency and maps being too local. Look at this on OpenStreet Maps. Unusable for most foreigners Plus they decided not to display Gulf of Mexico at all

Also if I’m not mistaken, MapQuest is pulling data from OpenStreet Map data mostly but also TomTom and others) Multiple times a day. So if any of the vendors pulls the update, it will end up there too

All is automatic and depends on what datasource is used. Same company may even use different data sources or just update some less frequently. None of them ever controls names manually. They have to match whatever is officially recognised by local government providing data.

Previously Google refused manual change until data is in official database they pull regularly and automatically. So as much as I despise Google, both them and Apple just use what is in official datasets

It is difficult & insane But below PBS screenshot shows that companies just rely on official data. Justified changes or not, they will reflect current state. When gov changed names of streets from “woke” to “patriotic” you had no choice but to adopt official ones. Otherwise your ID didn’t match

For those participating in Lake Ontario discussions I recommend reading this PBS article www.pbs.org/newshour/nat... #LakeOntario #LakeAmerica #Trump #MAGA #MadKing

I don’t think any company can just ignore official sources without disputing it first It’s change by official source -> it’s true Look at different views in Open Maps for example:

Some companies show either depending on type of the map and data source for the map Maps.me shows Lake Ontario on almost all types of maps apart from topographical map that seems to just use different or just more fresh data

Again. Stale data is just mistaken for “resistance”

It’s not an immediate rollout to all servers. It is much more complicated. Including caching Other apps like Open Street Maps do not “resist change” They just have stale data. Open Street for example had one massive bulk data import almost 10 years ago and from there it just adds local info

Polish OpenStreet Maps for example show “Krolewiec” which is an old Polish name for Kaliningrad and was officially changed a few years ago in Poland to piss off Russia And even though it was unilateral, maps changed because official data did In other countries the place is still called Kaliningrad

People praised maps.me for not budging too… They also keep showing Gulf of Mexico until you switch to topographical ma that uses different data sources No one manually changes names on those maps. Once the data is updated it reflects whatever is set in official datasets they pull from

Mapquest still lets you search Lake America and points immediately to Lake Ontario Also no company changed anything. That just automatically pulling data from official datasets. So it’s automatic and by design reflects whatever is officially set by local governments

Same with other seemingly “resisting” companies For example maps.me was recently praised for not changing the name. They also use Gulf of Mexico… until you switch view to topofgraphic map. Then you see Gulf of America. Map Quest also let you search for “Lake America” and points to Lake Ontario

They don’t change anything They just rely on official local databases :/ So if local authorities change names, they get updated in the next automatic sync

All depends where they get the data from. For example maps.me shows Gulf of Mexico, but once you switch to a topographic map that has a different data source…

When I search for Lake America on MapQuest it… points me to Lake Ontario. So despite not showing the new label, they also acknowledge the Trump-name in search and their DB #LakeOntario #LakeAmerica

I understand the sentiment, but it’s not exactly their conscious choice. It is automated and just adheres to official data sources It doesn’t work that they just display it to Americans. Americans get data and naming pulled from the US official sources, other countries get from their local ones

Without saying your age, what is your favourite movie that came out when you were 20? The Rock! It had hard competition including Independence Day and Mission Impossible, but Sean is another level!!!

I thought nothing could surprise me about the US anymore, but the government shutdowns resulting in government workers, civil servants left with no pay and services collapsing is an UBER BIZARRE. If that happened anywhere else ALL people would riot. #us #usa #shutdown #america #murica

How right wingers can easily spin stuff to look like some attack on Christianity And of course, the actual agitators were apparently AMERICAN Christians. Besides! It’s time of Ramadan so it’s particularly sensitive time to abuse Muslims
