Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Yep! A x-in-6 chance to spot a secret door is just a skill check in disguise. Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 27/09/2026ALSO why would I waste time writing an adventure site that has a 1-in-6 chance of being found? If I write something cool I want the players to see it. Yes, I know can hint it's there with rumors. But now you're describing a secret door, and we agree you shouldn't roll for those! 150

Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026Second thought, this is also a WotC problem because their published modules are trash. They're always "go here, get this quest, go there". They're literally teaching GMs to write stories for their players to walk through. 110
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 15/06/2026Right! And this comes back to system, because it's really hard to wing it in D&D. You *have* to prep encounters because it's really easy to TPK if you're not careful. And it's hard to adjust an encounter difficulty on the fly. The game needs heavy prep, so the players get used to a prepackaged story 010
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 14/06/2026Meanwhile, I can teach you Cairn or Stewpot in less time than it took me to write these tweets. If someone's first system is easy to learn they're going to be more excited about learning a new system. Don't blame the player, blame Hasbro/WotC for having a monopoly. 040
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 14/06/2026It took them a year to figure out D&D. They finally got good at it, they don't want to spend that long learning a new system. 140
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 14/06/2026Blaming this on the player is both cruel and wrong. This is a system problem. D&D is a really hard game to learn. It's complex and if you play badly it's not fun. You need a high level of system mastery to understand what's going on. So of course players are resistant to learning a new game! 2110

Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 14/06/2026The grown-up mysteries were also wild. He father was the local sheriff. The premise was that he would be stuck on a case, tell Encyclopedia about he, who would solve the case at the dinner table. None of the "solutions" would be admissible as evidence or survive a encounter with a defense lawyer. 010
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 14/06/2026The campaign ends with a showdown against the grownups criminal. No one believes you, because you're kids, so you have to do all the investigation yourself. 010

Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 05/06/2026And finally (for now), opposed rolls: The player and the GM both roll. Your roll becomes the target number for the other side. This is a broad enough category it's really a separate post. 010
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 05/06/2026Roll vs GM resource: The GM has a variable pool of points they can spend on the target number. The GM decides how important each roll is to them and spends some of their resource on the target number. Players can manipulate the pool as well, for ex reducing it before an important roll. 110
Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 05/06/2026Roll vs player resource: Your target number is how much food you have left, how much money you have or how good your reputation is. Victor, a Rascal certified game designer @thisisvictor.bsky.social · 05/06/2026Roll vs the fictional world: Different locations have different target numbers. The dark forest is more difficult than the friendly village. Or the target number goes up as you go deeper into the dungeon. 110
