Not the usual freestyle ride but a real slice of NYC

This is Now @thisisnow.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

At 63 years of age, I figured it was time to start posting videos of my absurdist bike rides, chatting about whatever comes to mind, near or far—before they put the training wheels back on.

Thankful for the new followers! FAQ: Shot on a single handheld camera, This is Now breaks from the normie monoform, leaning into authenticity and dérive. No lower thirds, narration, stock music, sound effects, or archival footage—think Slacker meets Dogme 95. open.substack.com/pub/thisisno...

A few people have described these bike rides as "NYC history tours." Others as "the first thing that's gotten me to sleep in weeks." A kind of Yoga Nidra on wheels. I'll take the compliment.

"It doesn’t open with spectacle exactly—just the rumor of a dead body, a bizarrely on-point Bette Davis line, and a setup so perfect it begged for an NSFW joke. We’re not back to explain the world. We’re back to be in it."

Some people thought Series Two might never see the light, especially after everything that unraveled post-DNC Chicago. But This is Now was never about sticking to the script.

America is finally being run like a business: a business acquired by private equity, leveraged to the hilt, its assets gutted, workforce slashed, and pensions raided before it gets offloaded in a fire sale. Hope you like working gig jobs for stock options in a company that won’t exist in five years.

The Artbound episode "Chinatown Punk Wars" is great, diving into the moment an unlikely Los Angeles neighborhood transformed into the epicenter of a whole new way of doing things—louder, faster, and unapologetically its own. youtu.be/DKa3g_I78wY?...

siegmund from the ring cycle i love you so much

Now that it is over, we can see in full what Siegmund chose to do with this sad little life of his. I’ve always found it so very lovely. When we meet him, he is a wanderer in the woods, a man in exile. A crusader against injustice, depersonalized by others and alienated even from himself, he is forced to bury somewhere secret his own true name. And yet, despite falling victim to extraordinary cruelty, in Siegmund, like many Wagnerian heroes, can be found the optimism of the creative spirit. He tells stories, devises aliases, and speaks in extensive metaphors. When given the first opportunity to express himself fully, to reveal his truest feelings and desires, he blossoms into a poet. The “Winterstürme,” the love song he sings to Sieglinde, is made only more beautiful when one thinks about how long its creator has been yearning to sing it. For a very brief time, Siegmund knows the love and kindness of another human being. This is so precious to him, gives his life such meaning, that he is willing to die for it. His end is no less than a testimony to human dignity. He dies an abolitionist refusing to be enslaved. And in telling the story of this little life, there is so much beautiful music, underscored, as always by a plaintive cello line. That line, of course, resolves upwards.

Apocalyptic Exceptionalism: the aggressively negative and oftentimes ahistorical belief that OUR generation is the one that’s doomed. Things are bad, most certainly, but the world’s been ending since way before any of us were born and things have been totally fucked in other eras.
