*Technically* not a river but I spent much of my youth in a house on a canal in Margate, Florida. All those canals are part of the Stranahan River. We had boats and jet skis going by the back of the house all day. That was kinda nice.

We were in Gatlinburg a few weeks ago and visited Pigeon Forge. When you talk about people who came from *nothing*, that was Dolly. She is what you get when you mix talent and creativity with kindness and empathy. She used her gift to lift up so many others.

Dan Carlin’s audio history of the Eastern Front is a bracing listen. Also there’s this memorial statue there that is 279 feet tall and yet that seems not large enough to commemorate the scale of the slaughter there.
