This Saturday, September 19 is International Red Panda Day. Why red pandas? They're taxonomically unique, highly adaptable, a little unconventional, and equipped with a surprisingly useful extra digit. Like the red panda, service design has its own particular way of seeing and doing things.
This ecosystem map looks at the taxonomy, characteristics, diet, and range of one of Harmonic’s favorite species: the red panda.

Red pandas aren’t really raccoons. They aren’t really bears. They’re their own thing: the sole living members of their own family, Ailuridae. They also have a “false thumb” that helps them grasp bamboo, flexible ankles that help them climb down trees headfirst, and a diet that includes everything from bamboo shoots and leaves to fruit, insects, bird’s eggs, and acorns.

Taxonomically unique, highly specialized, and pretty darn fascinating.
