tried to capture some of that sky last night, real quick, from inside the car last night. like a honey ocean up there.
looking up between the square buildings of DTLA art district in los angeles, the sky is glowing at dusk, the clouds and light mingle like spokes on a bicycle. the beams of the bright sun intersect the spokes.

Advice

Folks, I’m telling you,
birthing is hard
and dying is mean –
so get yourself
a little loving
in between.

Edvard Munch is generally known for The Scream but he painted the significantly less nightmare-inducing The Sun 1911 years later.
a painting of the sun rising (or setting?) over water, it's rays expanding out in yellow and orange dashes. A very geometric feel.

don't ever forget that the USPS was, not all that long ago, remarkably reliable. the grift is coming out of our wages, our services and our systems...
a sign, hanging titled on a concrete bollard, reads USPS CLOSED. Then, a second sign taped on top of it to elaborate. That one reads: SYSTEM DOWN.

Wile E. Coyote holds up a sign that reads "WE CANNOT JUDGE OUR WORTH ON THE WORK OF OTHERS"A Jenny Holzer piece from 1982 (Messages to the Public), a giant LED board in Times Square reads: "IT IS A MAN'S FATE TO OUTSMART HIMSELF"

jumped on the prompt from @zoomburst.substack.com "Write a poem in the form of a recipe" #poetry #OddChallenge #prompt
THIS CAKE WILL BREAK YOUR HEART
1 tablespoon of being
½ cup questions and dirt
2 sticks of education, melted
8 ounces of memories, forgotten

⅔ cup of why did that happen
2 eggs, separated for no good reason
A clove of expectations, minced
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Set the vanilla aside. In a large bowl, mix all of the other ingredients together while laughing. Hold the bowl up to the sun and see note the light warms your cold, cold skin. Do not put this in the oven, do not bake or freeze or eat. This cake is not delicious but a reminder that every good heart holds a recipe that breaks. Now add the vanilla.

To Know the Dark

To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.

LA's Central Library used to have outdoor reading rooms! you didn't even need a library card; you'd just borrow the book and return it before the reading station was packed up at the end of the day. lovely.
A black and white photo shows several men in suits and hats reading under a shady palm tree. There is a table and rolling shelf of books, partially shaded by an umbrella. A sign reads LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY, BORROW A BOOK TO READ IN THE PARK

Not Waving but Drowning
Stevie Smith
1902 – 1971

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he’s dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

Oh, better to be anything
than America as a gun.
