My 6yo son keeps saying that he hates that ad, straight after asking why they're not women on the team and it makes me have faith in the world.

NSF absolutely deserves a Nobel prize in its own right. A pity they don't do posthumous awards.

Yeah. I'd imagine that at the least, the next building renovation is going to think about keeping areas at ultra low temps, well shielded from vibrations and magnetism, etc.

My current bet is that it is still a little while before there are useful general purpose HPC Quantum applications popping up. The machines are not big enough yet to share, and applications are still quite specific.

I really think he's only high in the polls because of propped up name recognition. Once people see him on stage next to, say, Ossoff, let's see how punchable he becomes.

Trusting such an important document to a system that often puts it in a publicly accessible box, and regularly loses stuff anyway, has always been scary to me.

Whenever I drop off my kids at school, I hear a decent amount of chatter from other kids: "wow, that's a nice ebike!" It's clear what kind of technology excites the young ones.

It's active study. I'm walking around lab sections with photo-rosters, take attendance just for this reason, etc. But contact is so much better if I know the names. After the semester, that hard drive gets wiped embarrassingly fast though.

Thijs Heus @thijsheus.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Under 50 is 3 weeks to study the names; up to 100 I end up with a block of quiet ones that I don't quite know the names of. But 80pct is a good goal, no matter what.

@djphysicswebb.bsky.social, Mary Chessey and I have a newly accepted paper on uncollected test item responses on open-ended physics exam questions! Blank responses on exams are missing data, not measurements of physics knowledge or skills. Read on for details... Preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2606.05473

Missing Data on Physics Exams: Demographic Patterns, Course-Level Predictions, and Implications for Equity
In a previous quantitative retrospective study we showed that different demographic groups of students leave different numbers of problems blank on physics exams, leading to inequities in course outco...

Very cool, will read and ponder! Do you know how much of leaving blank is because exams are too long to finish? Because that would be an argument for simply shorter exams.

I like that your positive examples are not ones that ceased being, but the ones that tried to improve within their frame. Just like I can acknowledge as a scientist that I do need to fly too much, but I can try to limit my airmiles.

Prima kerel die Kelly, maar denk niet dat ie de primaries gaat overleven. Hij is niet de eerste astronaut met een politieke carrière: John Glenn, de eerste Amerikaan in een baan om de aarde, was ook senator en presidentskandidaat.

Over the past few years, I've seen a massive increase in micro mobility in Cleveland, both poor and rich areas. What's more, the school bike park is getting packed, suggesting a cultural shift.

Again, we should do both. But I agree, since I have my ebike, I only drive when I haul kids, groceries, or when the bike lane is full of snow.

Oh for sure, range is plenty these days! Waiting for a Bolt with bigger battery seems silly. All I meant was that it's the Euro sized cars (Fit, Fiat500) that will benefit the most from battery improvements - but they're not coming in the US market anyway.
110
Thijs Heus @thijsheus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Unfortunately, there is not much of a Fit market in the US for either ICE or EV. But I'd imagine that it will become easier to make small cars with great range once (semi)solid state batteries start to happen.

Thijs Heus @thijsheus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
That shouldn't be an either/or, right? Ebike is a fantastic economical/ecological choice, even if you have to occasionally supplement with rental or so. But for those who are in the market to buy new(ish) cars, EVs are super competitive for most (not all) needs.

Mja, het gemiddelde tankstation zit bij definitie niet aan een gezellig buurtpleintje. En dat is het probleem: benzine tank je onderweg, opladen doe je op bestemming.
