Mods are super aggressive with the rules enforcement. It would be a fantastic place for people to discover new things, but after a while you even lose interest in trying. I once had a QA about publishing that was super popular and it was shut down despite a ton of people taking part.

There are a bunch of considerations that go into it and a game might _require_ to be “big” to work, but we found that offering cheap pledges doesn’t automatically lead to success or more backers. That said, doing big for big’s sake is also not a super healthy way to do it. It’s complicated.

My two cents: when running a crowdfunding it costs almost exactly the same to acquire one backer that spends a significant sum than acquiring one that doesn’t. Ultimately to make a project viable you need to reach the goal, so if the contribution per backer is higher, everything else follows

(And even they set goals around 50K, which is laughable). They are not stupid, they just know what leads to the best financial outcome (in most cases). Ultimately crowdfunding is three weeks of psychological tricks. I don’t love it, but those mechanics are in place and few can afford to ignore them.

Just trying to explain why some behavior is incentivized and/or necessary. It depends also on the audience you have, as you point out, and the actual cost of making the thing. If the internal goal to make a board game is $1M, and you set that as a public goal, you better be Awaken Realms

No player that is not also involved in publishing has a clue what does it cost to make a game, and why would they, it’s an intricate and incredibly complex process. Also years of incentives from platforms to create campaigns in a certain way has gotten them used that “making games must be cheap”

…goal, the delta is the risk the publisher is ready to accept. It’s very demonstrable that a project with the real goal on display wouldn’t found as well as the same project with a lower goal on display. The only difference is momentum on milestones hit, algorithm push and early successful vibe.
