I guess a big factor to is that lots of game adaptations have been made by people who did not actually care for the game and wanted to use it to tell their own unrelated story. Sonic 3 and RE are examples of adaptations that diverge with a purpose and clear understanding of source material.

Going back to Sonic as an example, Gerald Robotnik being alive is a big change from original Sonic Adventure 2, but it still works story wise since he serves the same role in the story and has a similar motivation. Goofy Gerald is more subjective, but story wise it still works.

My hot take is, I don't think adaptations that stray or take a different interpretation should necessarily be shot down JUST BECAUSE of that alone, I can speak for in Devil May Cry's case, the show was just bad on it's own, even disconnected as an adaptation. As long as the tone fits.

Should probably clarify more, I'm more talking mundane details or complaining about not being 1-to-1, obviously super important character or plot details not being present can be a critique. Like if Sonic 3 had a twist of Maria of not dying, that would be an adaptation ruining story change.

Like I swear based on some negative "critiques" I've seen of that film, it sounds like some people just want characters to turn to the screen and make references to the game every two seconds. I get literally nothing from someone saying "It's not fully accurate to the game, so bad".

It is always frustrating seeing the divide of "critiques" of adapted media that focuses just on how "accurate" it is (i.e. how closely it follows the source material), vs critiques more focused on the tone and what the movie is trying to do.

Just started Fortune's Weave, specifically with Leda, and I do love how unapologetically vengeful she is. I do hope they don't hold back on her getting her revenge and her arc is more about what she'll do after she gets revenge and finding value in her own life.

Though Three Houses was the game that fulfilled the promise more of the "morally grey" choices, since while Edelgard was the more villainous one in most routes, there was no fully objectively good route, and an emphasis on the underlying corruption of the current system.

That was one of the few details I did enjoy about Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest in particular, your siblings leaned in to stereotypical villain archtypes design wise (Xander the Dark Prince, Camilla Evil Seductress, Leo Dark Wizard, and Elise Spoiled Brat), but were actually super nice.

But this mindset of "well I'm not interested in this game so it's basically worthless" is super harmful, because it can lead to people writing off games they may have otherwise enjoyed due to no fault on it's own, other than not perfectly fitting in to the "HYPE CYCLE"

Like people need to just disconnect from their own biases and understand that not every video game is made for them. Like if there's more serious issues with a game outside personal taste, like GTA 6's influence on the industry or the Palwrold lawsuit stuff is one thing.

There's been a lot of talk about how the term "indie" seems more muddied since more and more devs from Triple A Studios are banding together to release games independently, but honestly, it feels more like a rebirth of AA games more than anything.

Tim Curry has shown up in lots of roles and crushed him, but the one with the biggest impact on me was Ben Ravencroft in "Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost", where he gave a stellar two-faced villain performance and was part of a film that helped shape my love of writing and horror today.

I've definitely learned what battles to fight. Sometimes I'll type up a reply, but just never post it, since I know nothing good will come of it. Unless it's discourse about Video Game Genre naming conventions, I'll always jump in, I hate when "Rogue-lite" is applied to 95% of the genre.

Was lucky enough to be on the OFFICIAL final ride for "Fast and Furious Supercharged" (for the general public at least), and th energy other superfans had was just amazing. I had to make sure to capture the Ride's most legendary moment before it was gone for good.
