I went to Carlisle Cathedral to see the moon. I came home having pointed a UV torch at a Roman cremation urn. The glow is not uranium glass. It is modern superglue.

Karlovy Vary was meant to be a transit stop. Three hours between trains, and we found a geyser that throws 2,000 litres a minute nearly 12m up, throws a rainbow when the sun catches it, reads 1 µSv/h on the Radiacode, & used to clog its own outlet for thousands of years before blowing itself clear.

In 1906 a retired miner called Josef Prennig carried radioactive water down a mountain on his back, 40 litres at a time, to the world's first radon bathers. They called him Thunderbolt. Two years later they replaced him with a pipeline. New video: youtu.be/0h0qm3aqXHM

On the channel we are admirers of all geology, and this example of soft/hard rock erosion in Turkey is just outstanding. And nothing to do with what it looks like.

Season 3 of the channel starts with the most unlikely of items: a brown cardboard box, and a radioactive Nutella jar. Where's it taking me? To the home of radioactivity: Prague, Příbram and Jáchymov.

To answer why one corner of this Scottish island is radioactive, we followed the clues from the beach all the way to the summit. Here's 10 highlights from Part 2 of our Great Cumbrae adventure - I posted the first set a couple of weeks ago.

Fieldwork for the Open University Geological Society Northumbria Branch took me back to #Amble this weekend. The Carboniferous coal measures south of the town, majestic sandstone ripples and an ancient forest hiding under the sand. Ten pictures, ten small pieces of deep time. @ougeolsoc.bsky.social

This popped up on my feed today, I was going to read it out on my channel but god it's awful. I just couldn't get through it. But if trashy pulp fiction with a splash of uranium and a hint of God is your thing, this can be yours for £26 on eBay. The Host Rock by M F Doner.

We paid one last visit to the Creetown Rock & Gem Museum this month. Sadly, it is closing this summer after 40 years. Part museum, part shop, part tea rooms, this has been one of our happy places for a number of years. Sad to see it go - we wish the owners an amazing time in their retirement.

Tip of the day: met a couple at Tynemouth market who flea-market Prague 4x a year. They pointed me at U Elektry - one of Europe's biggest. 600 stalls, vintage Czech glass everywhere. UV torch + Radiacode packed for Czechia next month. Wish me luck.

Picked this up at the North Pennines Mineral Expo - a bright green Torbernite crystal from South Terras, Cornwall's only radium mine. Cubic crystals visible under the microscope, and the Radiacode confirmed it's hot. #Torbernite #Radioactive #Minerals #NorthPennines #SouthTerras #Geology

"Hush Hush" - a WWII anti-submarine listening post on Great Cumbrae. Hydrophones in the Clyde, listening for U-boats trying to sneak up the Firth. Locals called it "Hush Hush" because of the absolute silence needed to detect the enemy. #WWII #SecretBase #HushHush #Cumbrae #ColdWar #History

Cumbrae's sole standing stone - the Gouklan Pillar. 4ft tall, toppled and reset in concrete at some point. More of a "kneeling stone" really, but it's the thought that counts. #StandingStone #Cumbrae #Scotland #AncientHistory #RockHunting

Mrs. Uranium Hunter decided I need to improve on my geology so she gifted me a beginners guide from 1968. Crucially, this talk about this "uranium" that powers the "atomic bomb" through a complicated and "secret" process. I do hope one day they crack this.

I love a radioactive delivery. For a future video I needed a special radioactive item,so special I had to import it from a specialist dealer in Italy. If it reads this hot through the cardboard and packing, imagine what it will read when I unbox it! #radioactivity #radiacode

In physics, there is the OMG particle and the WOW signal. In researching my next "Human Factor" video, I found the UK environmental equivalent in these official data logs. We're calling it the WTF sample. 9M Bq. If you pocketed that, it would blast your skin with roughly 10 to 30 MILLIsieverts/h.
