This reminds me of ‘I’ve no regrets. I've been everywhere and done everything. I've eaten caviar at Cannes, sausage rolls at the dogs. I've played baccarat at Biarritz and darts with the rural dean. What is there left for me but marriage?’ #TheLadyVanishes

Spider-removal equipment. The cut-down plastic bottle needs to be the flexible sort, for pressing into corners. The card is dual-purpose, being ideal for both corralling and giving a gentle nudge. Once spider is caught, a brief conversation and a quick stroll into the garden ensues. #PatentPending

Book recommendation: The Badgers of Badger Hill by David Ross is about a clan of badgers living in Kent and the strangers who join them. It observes badger behaviour perfectly. Ignore the silly cover: the illustrations in this Target Books pbk are lovely. Find a copy if you can. #NationalBadgerDay

The stories it could tell. This is from the summer of 1889. (Content Warning: drowning)
Content Warning: Drowning.
This 1889 newspaper report, found at British Newspaper Archive, reads:
'An Inquest was held on Tuesday before Harry Wayman, Esq., Deputy-Coroner, on the body of Edward Foreman, who was drowned on the previous Saturday evening in the Brandon river by the sinking of a boat.
Deceased was 31 years of age. Frederick Palmer, of Feltwell said deceased was at the Waterman's Arms with him and others. Deceased was grinding his scythe. Palmer and deceased, with H. Ruddenham and Abraham Johnson, had some beer; but at closing time left the house quite sober. They proceeded to the boat, belonging to the landlord of the Waterman's Areas, lying by the side of the river opposite the public-house, and is used for crossing the river. They all got into the boat for that purpose. Palmer took the "sprit," and, when all were seated, shoved the boat off. The "sprit" stuck in the mud, and, when Palmer tried to draw it, the boat went from under him, and he fell into the water. He caught hold of the stern of the boat, which caused it to dip and fill with water. The boat sank, and, whilst sinking, the deceased, Ruddenham, and Johnson, got out of it into the river. It was getting dark at the time, but Palmer could see. The deceased appeared to sink almost immediately the boat went down. Palmer got to the river bank, and only once saw deceased's head above the water. Ruddenham and Johnson got out of the water on the opposite bank to Palmer. As soon as it was light on Sunday morning Johnson searched in the river where decessed was seen to go down, and recovered the body. Abraham Johnson gave corroborative evidence. Deceased, when in the water, called him by his nickname, and asked for Johnson to assist him. Johnson told deceased to make for the shore, and he (Johnson) said he would do what he could as soon as he reached the shore himself. He was fast in the mud, and was quite unable to make an effort to recover the deceased. Verdict, "Accidentally drowned."'

Is this a good time for a gentle reminder? If you are fortunate enough to have a hedgehog or hogs visiting your garden and want to help them feed up ahead of hibernation, please do not give them dry mealworms. #Hedgehogs love them, but they cause a horrible metabolic bone disease that can be fatal.
