In 2025, the Trump administration canceled more than $1 billion in funding for public safety and violence prevention. Millions more in funding from the Biden-era American Rescue Plan, which many cities have used to expand anti-violence programs, is also set to dry up this year.

Per our analysis with @theguardian.com of the most recent CDC data, the gun homicide rate among 1older teens has dropped from its peak in 2022, but it’s still roughly the same or higher today than it was before COVID-19. Most other age groups are better off now than they were before the pandemic.

In July, Johns Hopkins University and Baltimore’s public library system distributed 800 free gun locks across five branches — no ID or reason required. The first 100 gun locks at the city’s Central Library were gone within 24 hours.

In 2023, Krystal Gonzalez’s daughter, Aaliyah, was one of the 21 people shot at Baltimore’s deadliest mass shooting known to date. Only 18 and a new high school graduate, she died on the scene. Since then, Gonzales has honored her daughter’s memory through an annual “Aaliyah Day” community event.
