A drawing of a little creature that inhabits a speculative world.

This one's a juvenile. It resembled a rodent, standing on two legs, with a round fluffy body, large, eyes, and a narrow muzzle. It has no visible arms, and this one is golden yellow in color.

Poppy time approaches. And, for #nearbynature2025 the CA Poppy does not produce nectar, instead they bees and beetles they attract in numbers are feeding on delicious nutritious pollen. You can actually snack on the flowers too. #sciart #plants #Poppy

A small digital painting of a California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

The California Poppy aka Golden Poppy is the state flower of California. It has a very variable morphology, some grow low to the ground, some grow tall, some leaves are long and lacy and some are close and close and bunchy, some are very green and some are more glaucous.

While associated with California, it grows naturally all over the Western United States, as far North as Washington and as far East as Nevada, and extending down into Mexico.
Unnaturally, it's an introduced species in South America, Australia, and New Zealand.

I forgot to tag this #NearbyNature2025 for January. This plant is a native wildflower to California. And the name is because the deep taproot creates a little depression in the sandy soils it calls home. They do really like sand and I've never found one in any other kind of substrate.
