I learned that sotol is in the asparagus family. I always thought it was a type of yucca (sort of is) but apparently it’s closely related to agave, which is also in the asparagus family. Shoulda known the flower shoot of an agave plant looks like a giant asparagus. It’s all asparagus!

Monsoon storm north of Tucson August 23 2026. The storm is far enough away that there’s not a lot of thunder to accompany the lightning. I haven’t altered the speed at all and this went on for more than an hour.

Yeah, the simplest explanation would be an iron oxide desert varnish. There is a lot of naturally-occurring iron in granite and a lot of iron-rich red soil nearby. I think the habitation site was located by this area for collecting pigment. There are a lot of grinding stones around.

Odd deposits / coating on a granite boulder near an old habitation site. No idea what this is and I didn’t mess with it too much. Some of it has flaked off into a small pile at the bottom. It doesn’t look like it was created by a natural process. Not lichen.

This is a western diamondback rattlesnake. I spotted this one this morning when I looked down and it was right next to my foot. It chose to stay still and let me pass but it did glare at me a bit, I think.

Be careful out there! I know my limits and I’m not too proud to sit in the shade of a rock or in the bottom of an arroyo for 20 minutes if I need to. I also bring my own shade - big hat and long sleeves. And I bring 3 liters of water on every hike. Even if I dont need it, i may pass someone who does

The best thing about buying vintage reel to reel tape from eBay is finding out what’s on the tapes. This seems to be German polka. Date on the case is 1976. Seller was in Hof, Germany. So vintage Cold War era bootleg German polka. I recorded and digitized it into Logic.
