Monsoon storm north of Tucson August 23 2026. The storm is far enough away that there’s not a lot of thunder to accompany the lightning. I haven’t altered the speed at all and this went on for more than an hour.

Odd deposits / coating on a granite boulder near an old habitation site. No idea what this is and I didn’t mess with it too much. Some of it has flaked off into a small pile at the bottom. It doesn’t look like it was created by a natural process. Not lichen.

This is a western diamondback rattlesnake. I spotted this one this morning when I looked down and it was right next to my foot. It chose to stay still and let me pass but it did glare at me a bit, I think.

The best thing about buying vintage reel to reel tape from eBay is finding out what’s on the tapes. This seems to be German polka. Date on the case is 1976. Seller was in Hof, Germany. So vintage Cold War era bootleg German polka. I recorded and digitized it into Logic.

I’m curious about the layer of stones at the top. They are all rounded indicating they rolled there, probably in seasonal flooding. But what about the thick layer of finer material underneath? Would digging into that yield more stones peppered throughout?

It was overcast all day today in Tucson (very rare) with cooler temperatures so I hiked for almost 5 hours this morning. I saw 2 tortoises, 2 bunnies, a bunch of deer, the usual dose of lizards. No snakes. The birds are all molting and were out in force. Gila woodpecker & saguaro cactus. 🪶
