ZERO results on Bluesky searching for “Jeff Rushin”. That is madness, and it ends now. Here’s a tune from his excellent, apparently Baudrillard-inspired set earlier this year (on his own ON Records). Sadly no physical release for this one but he is on bandcamp 👍

The OGs, for a between-chores late afternoon #weekendsingles A rear view of 5/6 of their 7" output (the 1/6 is currently on Discogs from £175...) "£1.99", chuckles the price label for "Emma's House".
Picture of the five Field Mice 7" singles on Sarah Records, with minimalist sleeves and um, the famous penguins: "Emma's House", "Sensitive", "The Autumn Store" (Parts 1 and 2) and "September's Not So Far Away".

First two purloined from Rhythm Records in Camden, the Autumn Stores probably from Basildon Our Price...

What a song, what a naggingly insistent guitar hook, and what a fine fit for the overdue vinyl debut of SHOPFIRES. Maybe tilts more Flying Nun than Sarah? Anyway, this is why we all refused to let 7"s die.

The election noise was bleak indeed but something worthwhile came out of it here. This whole EP is a peach (and the title track, well oh my goodness).

Very happy to discover that the venue of the bar featured on the front and inside cover of ‘Nadine’ has been reopened as a pretty cool art gallery after many years of being left unoccupied (last known use of the place was a convenience store)….

Treating bluesky as confessional, though if you know us the admission below won’t surprise you. Steve's description of this 1987 EP ("endearingly/exhilaratingly amateurish") is perfect. A quick thread of adoration for this band...

Idly wondering if it's just me who - lacking inspiration in a bookshop - has plumped for something that shared a title with a favourite tune? Didn't regret plucking any of these three, very different, novels from the shelves...

Saw Linda Smith (and band!) down the road last night, fair killing it with a “greatest hits” set. Rare photo attempt below. Amongst the usual, v cool UTR crowd I felt an ageing relic, but was rescued by the beautiful simplicity of the music (“In This”, “I So Liked Spring”, “A Passing Cloud” etc…)

Annual marketing post, sorry... Exactly 3 yrs ago Harriet Records ❤️ released our entreatingly shambolic CD, a mere 30+ years from ‘recording’ the songs and 20 years after we promised to find the tapes. Fun fact: here's the original cover art vs final version (last minute change of plan)!
Originally planned sleeve for the Rosslyns anthology CD on Harriet, featuring blurry embankment view from a London Overground train (photographed by Echo on what’s now the Mildmay line), with loosely graf-inspired new band logo...... Sleeve we actually used for the Rosslyns anthology, featuring photo of a north London sunrise over silhouetted trees and the former Leroy House building (on the corner of Essex Road and Balls Pond Road).

Plus original letrasetted band logo from 1990 (designed by Paul from My Secret World and used on the “On The Beach” cassette label).

The sleeve art was all put together with kind help from the great Shawn Wolfe (Joe Kafka) who has worked with everyone from Negativland to SubPop!

34 years ago, give or take. We never got many fanzine mentions, so even your mate’s homemade 'zine counts... Thanks, Ben, wherever you are - still blush at this now!
From Ben's homemade fanzine (Oxford, 1992?)

y.o. spells The Rosslyns!

The Rosslyns are Kieron's band. He's been dead cagey though, and won't let me listen to most of his songs. He has, however, let me listen to "Paperchase", which is why the Rosslyns are here. "Paperchase" is a pop classic and I'm willing to oppose anyone who says otherwise in mortal combat. It powers along at a rate of knots like a groovy pop song should and features a pure and simple pearl of a guitar riff which contrasts brilliantly with lyrics that are set adrift on a lonely ocean. The problem is that it's so good it's likely to become a bit of an albatross (to continue the rather strained sea metaphor). Just as Po! will never better "Sunday Never Comes Around", so The Rosslyns will never better "Paperchase". Sigh, such is life. Still no point being morbid about it, is there?

We're camping this weekend & I made my radio show in a tent at 7am. Felt obscene to break the silence of our coffee-scented field so just music this week. Songs from @sunnyintervals.bsky.social, @redcavalry.bsky.social, @goodbyewudaokou.bsky.social, Matching Outfits, Fall Breaks, Pete Atkin & more.
Square flyer for Fresh Ingredients, my indie pop radio show, using Allen Ginsberg’s black-and-white photograph of Gary Snyder in Kyoto in summer 1963: Snyder at rest in a café on Juniken-doro Street, in the Kita-ku section near Daitoku-ji temple, where he studied. Over the grainy archival image, large orange text reads: “I put this show together in a tent at 7.30am, a silent dewy field drinking coffee and reading Gary Snyder — so it’s a show of songs, no talking.” Beneath it is the Snyder line: “Lay down these words / before your mind like rocks.” The show title Fresh Ingredients appears in huge lime-green lettering, with the subtitle You Can Visit, But You Cannot Stay in white, and a red badge reading “an indie pop radio show.” This week’s programme includes Sunny Intervals, Camberwell Group, Grolixes, Harbour, Fall Breaks, Alistair James, Trabant, Red Cavalry, Hen Ogledd, Matching Outfits, Niranjan Casinader and Goodbye Wudaokou.
