Arte Moreno bought the Angels in 2003 (the year after they won the Series) for $184 million. He then spent 23 years running them into the ground, let the stadium decay, wasted Trout and Ohtani, and sold for $4 billion. And the owners are crying poverty and threatening to kill baseball next year.

The NFL doesn't have "markets," it has 30 TV studios. Two-thirds of revenue comes in through the national-TV deals; there is no local TV, and successful teams sell 600-650K tickets. There is absolutely nothing connecting the business models of the two leagues. It's apples and concussions.

I was at the Somerset Patriots game a couple weeks ago. They had Sparky Lyle on the video screen trying to name as many meats as he could in 20 seconds. (They were just different kinds of ham.) People didn't know who Sparky Lyle was. It made me sad.

Brief rant: Yes it's cool that Brunson took less money so the Knicks could build a champion under the salary cap. But he shouldn't have *had* to. Salary caps are just tools billionaires use to suppress wages, and no one gets upset because the labor (pro athletes) make so much money. 1/5

another point in why a cap/floor system is inherently anti-labor is that the cap/floor system gives owners more power/leverage that can lead to much more union busting. if owners are given a system that they can wield more power with, there will be attempts to ensure they get what they want.

I will say this again and again until the cap fetishists get it. There is a 1:1 correlation between "leagues that have broken their unions" and "leagues with a payroll cap." Let that be a clue as to who wins in a cap system.
