i say this as a fan of innovation in sports! just, like, the computers aren't perfect, and making decisions blindly based on sensor data when the results are imperceptible to the naked eye (watching slow-mo 4k video) might not be a great idea. idk.

things like ABS, first down calculations, and (most relevant recently) offsides detection from sensors in the ball -- these things have margins of error that aren't 0.

the adoption of tech in sports seems to be inspiring a level of techno-chauvinism where we lose any nuance about the flaws and inaccuracy of tech compared to humans.

One of the things I really like about RCV is that, in elections where there are multiple acceptable candidates, it makes it possible to avoid a lot of the overhead of “tactical” voting, which has always seemed undemocratic and distasteful to me.

Or, at the very least, it's not _solely_ Sabrina Carpenter's responsibility. It's our responsibility to educate the young people in our lives about the systems that exist around art like this, and why it might be potentially harmful when taken at face value.

A lot of the criticism here smells like "what will my 12-year-old niece think about this" and, like, whether or not the album cover is harmful/misogynistic, it is not Sabrina Carpenter's responsibility to make art that's anodyne enough to be palatable and unharmful to 12-year-olds.

screenshot of headline from Gothamist breaking news email:

Judge permanently dismisses corruption charges against Mayor Adams
Mayor Eric Adams’ legal battle has ended after a federal judge permanently dismissed his corruption case, leaving the mayor free of his charges but politically battered by allegations (begin highlighted text) that the dismal leave beholden to President Donald Trump. (end highlighted text)

i used to teach my CS students that computers are "smart in a dumb way" -- i.e. powerful, but extremely literal. if you tell it to do something, even if it's questionable or wrong, it'll do it. LLMs reverse this paradigm; i'd call them "dumb in a smart way," making assumptions to get an answer.
