We even ran into it with Star Command. Our first "season" were more stand alone Original Series style episodes, while the next was more like a modern prestige series: everything moved one plot forward, more like a movie. I prefer the older style, tbh.

Trek is a good example; DS9 had the Dominion war, but it also had one and done episodes during that. Now, everything would be in furtherance of the Dominion War plot; we'd get In the Pale Moonlight but might miss Little Green Men or Bar Association.
